Gladiator 2 Coming to Theaters in November 2024

When Ridley Scott announced Gladiator 2, fans could hardly wait to see what he had in mind. One of the blatantly obvious facts about the franchise is the first movie’s main character, Maximus, died at the end. The first Gladiator movie had some fantastic supporting characters, but which, if any, would be prime candidates to star in its sequel? One of the biggest reasons is that the first Gladiator really didn’t need a sequel at first glance. There have been many rumors about the plot, action, character points, twists, and turns, but as the release date comes ever closer, here are some points about Gladiator II that we know.

A Recap of ‘Gladiator’

The first movie’s success revolves around Maximus, who, before he meets his tragic end, becomes a man of singular vision to avenge the deaths of his family and mentor. (Spoiler) At the movie’s end, he kills Commodus despite being stabbed by the coward before entering the arena. He is victorious; however, he succumbs to the wound dealt to him before the match and, with his dying breath, gives the following instructions.

He requests his fellow gladiators’ release and aid and restore Roman leadership to the senet. After he passes, his spirit is taken to his murdered family, and the images he dreamed of that kept him going through the war. His body is treated like a fallen Roman soldier instead of a common slain gladiator.

What’s Coming In November

A key point we know about Gladiator 2 is that it focuses on Lucius Verus, the child who was the heir to the Roman Empire in the first movie. It seems that in the years following the first movie, he has turned from political life and has taken up living with his wife and son, living a quiet life in Numidia. Much like the first movie, the Roman army marches on his home, and he is forced into slavery. Rather than submit as a slave, he turns gladiator and then submits to a life of servitude.

What We Know About The Crew

From behind the scenes, we have many of the original crew who worked on the first Gladiator movie. Ridley Scott has come back to direct the sequel. Scott is, without a doubt, one of the most well-known directors. He has a reputation for high-grossing films and several Academy Awards.

Several of Riley’s films include Thelma and Louise, Blade Runner, Alien, and the more modern The Martian and Napolean. These films cover a wide range of times, places, and plots, and he has been making them since most of us have been alive.

Who Else Is Making The Movie

Another returning Legian is David Scarpa, a screenplay writer. He has recently been known for his work in All the Money in the World and Napoleon. With the help of Peter Craig, they both made other masterpieces like The Batman, Mockingjay 1 and 2, and Top Gun: Maverick.

We also have a cast that Ridley has put together that is probably the best of the year. Paul Mescal is playing Lucius Verus, Joseph Quin Emperor Geta, Fred Hechinger Caracalla, Pedro Pascal Marcus Acacius, and Denzel Washington is Macrinus.

Most of these stars are known through their previous work, such as Aftersun, A Quiet Place: Day One, Stranger Things, The White Lotus, and Fear Street. These are a few examples: Pedro and Denzel are forced to be reckoned with by themselves, and now we will have them together.

Who We Will See Again

Out of the great cast, we know of a single character who will be returning to their previous role in Gladiator 2. Connie Nielsen will once again play Lucilla. In the first movie, she was Caesar’s daughter but loved Maximus as well. She was conflicted by politics and her crazy brother, living only for her son and mourning her murdered father.

We do not have long to wait, as Gladiator 2 is scheduled to release on November 22. It opens alongside Wicked, which is one of the most popular times of the year for movie premiers.
