George R.R. Martin: A Song of Ice and Fire Will Never Be Finished

Geroge R.R. Martin

George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, which was adapted into the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, has enthralled fans ever since its debut in 1996. Fans have anticipated the sixth book in the series, The Winds of Winter, for years, but now the author says it may never be finished.

George R.R. Martin: “I Will Never Finish WINDS”

In a blog post, Martin stated, “You have given up on me, or on the book. I will never finish WINDS.” He added that if he did finish Winds, he’d never finish A Dream of Spring, which was set to be the next book after Winds, then he stated, “If I do, it won’t be any good.” He also said that “I am going to die soon anyway, because I am so old. I lost all interest in A Song of Ice and Fire decades ago.”

“I Care About Westeros”

Even though he claimed that he “lost all interest in A Song of Ice and Fire” and accused his fans of not caring about any of his other projects, Martin still had this to say about his beloved world of Westeros.

I care about Westeros and WINDS as well. The Starks and Lannisters and Targaryens, Tyrion and Asha, Dany and Daenerys, the dragons and the direwolves, I care about them all. More than you can ever imagine.

It seems that George R.R. Martin still has a lot of love for A Song of Ice and Fire, but at the same time, he grew weary of actually writing it.

How Much of Winds of Winter is Written?

In a December 2002 interview with Stephen Colbert, Martin stated that he had written around “1,100 or 1,200 pages,” with “another 400 or 500” to go. After many fans were disappointed with the Game of Thrones finale, they hoped that the book series would have a better ending. While the next season of House of the Dragon and the new prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will continue to give fans their Westeros fix, it’s not the same as reading George R.R. Martin’s words. We may never know his ending to the saga.
