Broadway star Gavin Creel is dead at 48. The stage, musical, and TV actor died on Monday, Sept. 30, 2024. His representative announced that he died of metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma in his Manhattan home. He is survived by his mother, Nancy Clemens Creel; father, James William Creel; two sisters, Heather Elise Creel and Allyson Jo Creel; and his partner, Alex Temple Ward; and his dog, Nina.

Gavin Creel was a widely acclaimed musical theater actor. He was famous for his roles in Hello, Dolly!, Hair, and Thoroughly Modern Millie. He also starred in Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Stories in 2021. The Ohio native attended the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater, and Dance. Creel debuted on Broadway in 2002 when he starred alongside fellow newcomer Sutton Foster. Creel played Jimmy Smith, while Foster played the eponymous Millie in the production of Thoroughly Modern Millie.

All who knew and loved him will deeply miss his sparkling presence and generous nature.” The obituary added that there would be a private farewell service for Creel.

Gavin Creel was diagnosed with Sarcoma in July 2024. He underwent treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering. However, he passed away two months later. Creel wrote and performed in a memoirist show titled Walk on Through: Confessions of a Museum Novice last winter. The Broadway actor had been vocally and physically energetic during his performances. Hence, his death came as a shock to many as there were no signs of illness.

She said on her Instagram that it was a “loss” that the “beloved” actor” was gone. Midler and Creel starred together in Hello, Dolly! Midler revealed that she always looked forward to working with Creel every night. She also called him a radiant actor beloved in the Broadway community.

His co-star, Foster, declared on her Instagram that she would love the deceased stage actor forever. Meanwhile, actor and producer Lin-Manuel Miranda noted that Gavin Creel was well-loved. He expressed condolences to Creel’s loved ones and also declared his adoration for Creel. British star Hannah Waddingham shared on X, formerly Twitter that she was “shaken to the core” to learn of Gavin Creel’s death. Referring to Creel as the “real deal” and talent, she disclosed that she was heartbroken over the news.
