Those who have been using, in some cases, even fangirling over Valve and Gabe Newell will recall that in Nov. 2025 they announced 3 new pieces of hardware for Valve aficionados to drool over. The 3 new items on Valve’s chopping block for release are The Steam Machine, Steam Frame VR Headset, and a new Steam Controller. According to the information Valve disclosed, these would be compatible with any existing, third-party, and even older hardware. That was months ago, though. What has happened since?

Valve Addresses Concerns

When the announcement for the new hardware dropped, many began affectionately calling it “The GabeCube,” but that was nearly 4 months ago. Have there been any problems or new developments? Valve announced in Feb they had initial plans of having solid prices and launch dates at that time, though due to unexpected circumstances revolving around memory and storage created by an ever-evolving Data Center and AI boom, it has created what feels like a shortage of stock. With there being so little available to the market and prices skyrocketing, these critical components mean that Valve has to revisit the schedule as well as pricing. Could these issues cause a massive price hike over what they had anticipated?

Their hopes of shipping all 3 devices in the first quarter of 2026 still stand, the trouble being getting everything together and wrapped up in a way that leaves them confident in the announcement. They are trying to keep the fans updated, with a blog they will use to deliver deep dives, using video and written blogs about news and updates. They plan to keep the release in Q1 of 2026, but their initial post, which is now edited, it definitely sounded like there were concerns about when.

Original wording: “We hope to ship in 2026, but as we shared recently, memory and storage shortages have created challenges for us. We’ll share updates publicly when we finalize our plans!”

Updated wording: “We shared recently that there have been challenges with memory and storage shortages, but we will be shipping all three products this year. More updates will be shared as we finalize our plans.”

Many are hoping Valve is able to hold on to their promise and deliver the goods. There are many instances of bad products being advertised, but their promise of The Steam Machine is like a Hail Mary for those in the PC space. It revives otherwise complacent searches for a viable computer capable of playing good or even great games that require some extensive hardware to make it happen. It even ignites a fire in the hearts of those who like to customize, as Valve has plans to share the schematics much like they did with the release of the Steam Deck.

So What Now?

All anyone can do at this time is wait, with bated breath, as we get bits and pieces of news from Valve via their blog. Through their testing, they have already shown that the machine can play a vast majority of Steam titles at 4k 60 FPS. For those who don’t know, that’s really amazing and great news. They do make note that there are some titles currently that require more upscaling which might make it best to play at lower framerates in order to keep a good internal resolution.

As of the latest update, they are working on HDMI VRR, or High Definition Multimedia Interface Variable Refresh Rate. The goal is to improve upscaling while optimizing ray tracing. Valve is dedicated to approaching gaming from a multitude of different angles to deliver an unforgettable experience for gamers.
