Under the Island Trailer – An Exciting Romp Through a Sinking Island

Under the Island is an indie action RPG that just came out for game consoles and Steam. Take one look at the trailer, and it will remind you of old-school adventure games and modern indie darlings. So, what does this new game have to offer? Does the trailer invite you to play the game, or is Under the Island just like the hundreds of other indie RPGs out there?

Let’s Look at the Under the Island Release Trailer

Under the Island was developed by Slime King Games and published by Top Hat Studios and Doyoyo Games. According to the game’s Steam page,  you play Nia, who has just moved to Seashell Island, which will sink under the ocean if no one does anything. Of course, it’s up to Nia to save the day, which will involve exploring the island’s different biomes, each of which has a different environment.

The release trailer is packed with quick glimpses of different gameplay features. The game features beautiful, colorful pixel art that brings games like Stardew Valley to mind. The top-down adventuring and hack-and-slash battles will also remind you of The Legend of Zelda. This should mean that the game will bring some nostalgic smiles to players.

The trailer has blink-and-you-miss-them shots of Nia fighting a mimic treasure chest, Nia lighting a torch and awakening a giant serpent, and Nia collecting various items, including a hockey stick and a cassette recorder. Under the Island looks like it has a sense of humor about RPG tropes and is trying to slightly subvert them while still respecting the genre. Of course, who wouldn’t want to whack monsters apart with a hockey stick?

So What Else Does Under the Island Offer Besides Battles?

Well, it appears that there will also be plenty of puzzles to solve. The trailer contains a shot of Nia solving a Picross puzzle on a cave floor, so you might have to use your brain to get through the game instead of just swinging your sword at everything. The Picross puzzle on the cave floor seems to indicate that there will be a variety of puzzles, since you don’t usually see Picross puzzles in RPGs.

The trailer also asks, “Which choices will shape your fate?” before showing Nia talking to people in the towns. Perhaps she will be able to befriend people who will help her out, or perhaps the wrong choices will make her enemeies. There’s also an octopus monster telling her she has to “face the consequences.” Could this mean that the player made a wrong choice that the octopus didn’t like?

The trailer shows many different environments, such as snow, water, and desert. It looks like the island will be packed with atmosphere, which will make it a joy to explore. There also seem to be boss battles with attacks that go flying all over the screen, which could give the game a little bit of a bullet hell flavor. That could make for some amazing, heart-pumping boss battles. It looks like Under the Island will be packed with action and personality.

Under the Island Looks Awesome!

Speaking as a huge fan of indie RPGs, Under the Island looks like exactly my thing. The pixel art is gorgeous, the battles look super fun, and the environments look like they will be interesting to explore. Throw in some creative puzzles and gameplay variety, and it looks like a complete package. I have already downloaded the demo, and I plan on trying it out very soon. Under the Island is available for Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S, and it has a free demo. If you enjoy action RPGs, go download the demo and see if you click with the game.
