Square Enix’s Chrono Trigger Remake is Rumored to be in Development According to Leaks
Square Enix’s Chrono Trigger turned 30 years old last year, and fans of the game have been requesting a modern remake or remaster of the titular game. This classic RPG follows a group of adventurers, with the main protagonist, Chrono, who travel through time to prevent a global catastrophe. The original game was an immense success after its release, especially because of how influential it became in the RPG gaming space.
Nintendo Power described certain aspects of Chrono Trigger as revolutionary, introducing the concept of multiple endings in RPG games, creating unique mechanics for the game, and making a beautiful game with the RPG graphics many people have come to love. Now, according to a reliable leaker, Chrono Trigger is getting its own remake. Here’s all that’s been rumored throughout cyberspace.
Chrono Trigger Remake is Happening, According to Rumors

Recently, on the social media site Resetera, a forum was created by one user, discussing the recent survey by Square Enix’s Team Asano, the studio behind the Octopath Traveler series, which asked fans what Square Enix title they would want to see remade in the future. This sparked a whole discussion between fans of Square Enix games, many of whom had ideas ranging from different Final Fantasy games, Dragon Quest, Xenogears, etc.
It wasn’t until leaker John Harker made an interesting comment about Chrono Trigger that caught many fans’ attention. Here is what he posted on the Resetera forum:
the chrono stuff is already in dev tho.
Let’s ask for something else, like opening back up triangle strategy 2 or a legit sequel to final fantasy tactics !
Where Harker got this information, I’m not sure. How he obtained it and why he would claim such a thing without evidence is also uncertain. However, Harker is a reliable leaker who has been providing pretty accurate information about upcoming games and showcases for almost a decade. For example, he revealed accurate information regarding details about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, as well as when State of Play and Nintendo Direct presentations would happen.
Fan Responses
It isn’t a stretch to say we can believe what Harker says about how a Chrono Trigger remake is already in the works. Here’s what some fans have said regarding Harker’s post:
“whaaaaa
where
when
who” says, user Neha.“When I think of Team Asano, I think of HD-2D and, honestly, nostalgic projects that are meant for people who want to go back to more traditional titles so as much as I would love to selfishly mention Parasite Eve or Chrono Cross or something, I wouldn’t want that sort of approach for those two games at all.
If I truly can pick anything I want, I’d actually go for FFV or FFVI. I’d expect them to go for Chrono Trigger first so I wouldn’t vote for it, but I’d play it if it came out. Vagrant Story could be cool!” wrote, user ventuno.
“This is the only time I will ever root for this type of remake, but I think Chrono Trigger is honestly best served with a FFVII Remake-type facelift only because the battle system there feels like a fully realized version of what CT was going for in the first place. Like I imagine stuff like the Ozzie, Slash and Flea fight with the conveyor belts and I can so easily see that in full 3D lol. They would have to nail the art style though to bring out maximum Toriyama-ness.
That said, I would absolutely fuck up a HD-2D remake of Chrono Trigger.” says, user brinstar.
“Chrono Trigger full HD-2D remake with new ending/content that retcons some stuff from Chrono Cross.👍” wrote, user Buckle.
A Chrono Trigger remake would be absolutely fun to play. It’d be interesting to see the game remade with modern graphics and a playstyle that matches modern gaming today. Square Enix has yet to release any official statement about a Chrono Trigger remake, though I wouldn’t be surprised if the rumors are true and something gets announced later this year.
