State of Decay 3 Rumor Confirmed and Development Hasn’t Even Started

State of Decay 3 is the upcoming sequel to the zombie survival game series by Undead Labs and Xbox Game Studios. Now, State of Decay 3 has an unusual history to it. In 2020, a short trailer was released for State of Decay 3, showcasing an undead deer, exciting fans who’ve been waiting for the sequel. The funny part is that the game didn’t even exist back then. It was an idea by the head of Undead Labs, Philip Holt, written on a Word document.

A more recent trailer was dropped last June, which showcased very little gameplay and a lot of in-game footage and cinematics, so we can kind of guess what the concept of this game will be like. There’s very little information revealed about the newest installment to the series; however, Holt promises fans that the game will be even better than State of Decay 1 and 2. Here’s what we know about State of Decay 3 so far.

The Studio head of Undead Labs, Phillip Holt, recently shared exclusive details on the early development of State of Decay 3, which still has very little information revealed to the public. Apparently, when the first trailer of State of Decay 3 was released in 2020, which showcased a zombie deer, the game did not exist. The trailer was made by Blur Studio, a pre-rendered video to showcase the idea of the game, rather than an official reveal of the sequel.

In truth, according to Holt, the zombie deer doesn’t exist. It’s not a real part of the game, but it definitely excited fans of the series, and it didn’t help that this trailer was released at that year’s Xbox Games Showcase. Also, according to Holt, State of Decay 3 was assumed to be one of the first Xbox Series X titles, given the timing of its announcement, but according to Holt, proper work on the title had not even begun at that point.

New Developments

Holt sat down with Sunny Games, a YouTube channel discussing the early development process of State of Decay 3, revealing all of these details and the truth behind that first trailer reveal during the 2020 Xbox Games Showcase. During the discussion, Holt emphasizes that there will be no zombie deer in State of Decay 3. During the early thought process for the game, the devs played around with the idea of zombie animals; however, the idea was scrapped after the devs decided it was too difficult and expensive.

When Undead Labs began development on the project, going into testing and executing ideas, some things that appeared in the first trailer changed. However, Holt reassures fans that some of the elements in that early preview will be part of the final build of the game. These new revelations also explain why there’s been a four-year gap between the preview trailer and the official reveal trailer.

Holt explains that because development hadn’t even started when the preview trailer came out, and because devs were still working on updates for State of Decay 2, another trailer wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. Until now. Now, real progress has begun on the third installment; however, there’s still much information on development that hasn’t been announced yet. Gameplay hasn’t been revealed, the story concept is still in the air, and a release date or expected release date has yet to be announced. However, now that a new trailer has been revealed, we should expect a lot more announcements on State of Decay 3.
