Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 Review – Scary Chase Scenes, Insane Revelations, and Broken Things

The latest chapter in the Poppy Playtime series dropped today, and I’ve had the privilege of experiencing the game. We return in Chapter 5, going even deeper into the Playtime Co. factory as we delve even deeper, discovering more secrets and finding out what the Prototype really is. Chapter 5 is scarier and promises even more hellish encounters with the toys of Playtime Co. Here is my full review of my playthrough of Poppy Playtime Chapter 5: Broken Things.

Now, a full-on chase sequence wasn’t what I was expecting once I was able to control the main character, but that’s sure what I got. After the usual Poppy Playtime commercial flashback, this time introducing the Wrongside Outimals, we are immediately met with Playtime Co.’s emergency security system, Huggy Wuggy, hot on our tail. The moment he busts down the airlock door separating us, we are thrust into an incredibly difficult chase scene.

This chase scene is difficult, more so because of the ensuing panic I had to overcome (I died 10 times). And that’s a lot of what I had to overcome. Chapter 5 was really good at keeping me on my toes. We don’t have Poppy or Kissy, or even Ollie, in our ear to help us out of sticky situations. I am immediately reminded of the creepy atmosphere of the first chapter. The first chapter was really short, but it did what it set out to do, which is scare the crap out of players and set up an expansive storyline about children’s toys.

Chapter 5 is a great addition to the series, bringing back the iconic Huggy Wuggy and setting an intense, anxiety-inducing atmosphere, making the game 10 times scarier. The graphics are even better than in previous chapters, too, which makes gameplay smoother and better to look at. The one caveat I have with the game is how confusing some of the sequences can be when the game wants you to do something specific, such as the elevator scene, where you have to avoid Huggy’s arms from reaching you.

The Prototype

This is where we get to finally meet the infamous Prototype, the big bad we’ve heard and been teased so much about throughout the series. The Prototype, who is revealed to be Oliver Ludwig, the eldest son of Playtime Co. founder Elliot Ludwig, has woven his presence throughout every aspect of the abandoned factory. It is here we also find out that the Prototype was actually Ollie, our helpful friend from the third and fourth chapters, disguising himself as his old identity to manipulate Poppy and us.

This was an incredible revelation, as it answers questions from previous chapters and ramps up the intensity we experience in this chapter. We see how Oliie was made into the Prototype and understand how he becomes the prototype, not just physically, but why he set so many unfortunate events into motion after the Hour of Joy.

Poppy Playtime Full Series Overview

Personally, I’ve been really excited for the continuation of the Poppy Playtime series. I’ve been following the series since the first chapter was released in 2021. The engaging gameplay and creepy atmosphere you experience throughout the game have made the series interesting, making fans excited for each new chapter in the series. Chapters 1 through 4 definitely help set up the suspense of the Prototype, the big bad of Poppy Playtime.

The first chapter, A Tight Squeeze, definitely hooked many people, setting up a great storyline and introducing one of the most iconic video game monsters to come out within the past 5 years: Huggy Wuggy. Chapter 2, Fly in a Web, definitely expanded the lore and introduced some great side characters as well. It was in chapter 3, Deep Sleep, that we got to see how dark the series was turning, after finding out the extent of what happened during the Hour of Joy.

It was in chapter 4, Safe Haven, that we got to see just how intense things can be, witnessing the unraveling of the main antagonist, Doey, and who he was, which in itself was actually a really sad storyline. Chapter 5, Broken Things, was a great addition to the series, carrying that same intense, anxiety-inducing atmosphere from the previous chapters. Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 is out now exclusively on PC, with console ports for PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch planned for release later in 2026.
