State of Play Reveals God of War Trilogy Remake by Santa Monica Studios

State of Play dropped so many exciting reveals, from a new and possible final trailer for Resident Evil Requiem to Konami’s announcement of the newest Silent Hill game. Now, Santa Monica Studios has revealed a God of War Trilogy Remake of the first three games in the series during PlayStation’s State of Play. The reveal trailer did not reveal much, but that doesn’t mean Santa Monica Studios hasn’t given fans anything to talk about. Here’s all that was revealed during PlayStation’s State of Play.

One of the most iconic franchises, God of War, has over 20 years under its belt, 5 wildly successful games within the series, and a huge, dedicated fanbase. I remember playing the original trilogy games and how much I loved the series after playing the first game. The nostalgia fans feel for this game is substantial, and during PlayStation’s State of Play, Santa Monica Studios announced that a remake of the first three God of War games is currently in development and will be released sometime this year.

The reveal trailer revealed nothing, from improved art style to added content; however, all three games will be remade as a trilogy, and though we don’t know how the set will be released, the fact that this is happening feels almost surreal. It was also revealed that Santa Monica Studios will be bringing back TC Carson, the original voice actor of Kratos in the first three games. This is such exciting news for fans who grew to love the hardened, revenge-seeking demigod, hell-bent on bringing down Olympus.

TC Carson doesn’t spoil much, though he does confirm that the remake is still in early development. This Trilogy remake also comes after the God of War series celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. It’s also not clear whether the God of War Trilogy Remake will be released on all platforms; however, it’d be a surprise if it weren’t, given that the most recent God of War games are available to play on Steam. The first three games have been remastered and are available to play on PlayStation.

Along with the announcement of the God of War Trilogy Remake, Santa Monica Studios is working with Mega Cat Studios to release God of War Sons of Sparta, a 2D action-adventure, with retro-style gameplay and a compelling storyline that gives us a little insight into Kratos’s past before he brought down Olympus. This is Kratos’s story before he became a god, and his life as a young Spartan warrior. Here’s an excerpt on the game’s PlayStation page:

Every legend has a beginning – before he was a God, before he was a father, Kratos was a young Spartan.

Experience an untold chapter in Kratos’ journey set during the harsh years of Spartan training alongside his brother Deimos. Through endless trials, their minds, bodies and hearts have been molded to become Spartan soldiers for whom duty and honor mean everything.

After a fellow cadet goes missing, Kratos and Deimos vow to find him and embark on an adventure that will put their training and Spartan spirit to the test.

Some of the key features of God of War Sons of Sparta include a retro-style game format, which we’ve yet to see in the God of War franchise, using a spear, as opposed to Kratos‘ iconic Blades of Chaos, character building to enhance your abilities, and world exploration of a land we’ve only heard about through Kratos’ stories. This game is definitely meant to keep interest in the series while the devs work on releasing the God of War Trilogy Remake.

God of War Sons of Sparta is only available to play on PlayStation; however, it is already available to play now for $29.99. The God of War Trilogy Remake is making its way to us soon, so in the meantime, we can enjoy Sons of Sparta and all the previous games in the franchise while we wait for the release of the remake.
