Steam Machine – Exciting Updates and More Reveals in 2026

If you didn’t know, Valve, the video game developer, also behind the creation of Steam, is coming out with their own console: The Steam Machine. The Steam Machine was one of a trio of hardware announcements from Valve in late 2025, with the company also revealing the Steam Controller and the Steam Frame, a new VR headset that would effectively replace Valve Index.

The new hardware was revealed last year and has been predicted to be released sometime in 2026. Now, Valve has announced its first update on the Steam Machine this year, and here’s what they’ve revealed on the development of the hardware.

A few days ago, AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su announced an update on the development of the Steam Machine. Valve is still on track to release all the hardware this year; however, everything will be delayed. Valve had planned to release more information, such as pricing and a launch date for the console; however, the shortages of parts in the global market are the cause of the delays. Here’s the full announcement Valve had updated on the console’s Steam page:

We started the Steam Hardware Blog as a way to specifically address topics surrounding Steam Hardware, and wanted to start by tackling some of the most frequently asked questions we’ve received since announcing these three new products on November 12th:

  • Steam Controller
  • Steam Machine
  • Steam Frame

When we announced these products in November, we planned on being able to share specific pricing and launch dates by now. But the memory and storage shortages you’ve likely heard about across the industry have rapidly increased since then.  The limited availability and growing prices of these critical components mean we must revisit our exact shipping schedule and pricing (especially around Steam Machine and Steam Frame).

Our goal of shipping all three products in the first half of the year has not changed. But we have work to do to land on concrete pricing and launch dates that we can confidently announce, being mindful of how quickly the circumstances around both of those things can change. We will keep you updated as much as we can as we finalize those plans as soon as possible.

Release Date and More News

Even though Valve is experiencing delays with the release of the hardware, they assure people that everything is still on track to be released in the first half of 2026. Valve has shared that they will be sharing the specific specs and details of the Steam Machine, so people can customize and make their own. This’ll definitely give people and manufacturers alike a chance to show off their computer prowess, as well as showcase the adaptability of the Steam Machine.

With the release of the Steam Machine, Valve is focusing on improving upscaling and optimization for ray tracing performance, as well as improvements to the HDMI VRR. As for the Steam Frame, Valve claims that it should be able to work for players who wear glasses, but it may depend on the width of the frames. The company also disclosed how its foveated streaming differs from the foveated rendering in other VR headsets.

Valve has been working tirelessly on all the different hardware they’ve introduced last year, from the Steam Machine to the new Steam controllers and the Steam Frame. The shortages of hardware parts have slowed down development, and Valve has yet to announce a release date for the Steam Machine; however, Valve is still confident in launching the new products in the first half of 2026, so we should hope and expect that production will start soon.
