Bungie Confirms Delays for Destiny 2’s Shadow and Order Update

The entire Destiny 2 community has been dreading yesterday’s announcement. The Shadow and Order Major Update release date has moved. Instead of releasing on March 3rd, the update will release on June 9th. That means we will be without additional content for Destiny 2 for three extra months. The update is also receiving a name change, and it will not be known as Shadow and Order.

Bungie’s Harrowing Destiny 2 Announcement

At 2:00 PM PST (11:00 PM CET) on February 18th, Bungie posted on X regarding updates for Shadow and Order. Instead of releasing on the original date, March 3rd, the major update will arrive on June 9th. That in and of itself is a sucker punch to the Destiny 2 community. The game is already in a terrible state. Renegades managed to restore some life to the game, but that did not last. The pains of the Portal and lack of content have caused many to take a break from the game.

Now that we will have to wait an additional three months, it will take its toll on the community. At the very least, it can not get much worse. All it means is that Destiny 2’s players will remain lower for an extended period. The delay will mean that the current season will be longer than Season of the Lost was before Witch Queen.

Some Hope for Destiny 2

Along with the announcement came additional details for what the update will add. Bungie wants to add more aspects to the game, which has resulted in the delay. The update will be on a larger scale, and Bungie has promised quality-of-life updates. More information on the update will follow shortly. Here is what we know is coming with the next update:

  • Weapon Tier Upgrading
  • Tiered Gear to All Raids and Dungeons
  • Pantheon 2.0
  • Tier 5 stats for Exotic Armor
  • And More

DMG followed up on Reddit to give more details about the tiered gear. All raids and dungeons will be getting tiered armor. The weapons from dungeons will move to the tier system. The raid weapons will receive upgrades and new perks. The upgrades will allow players to match them to Tier 5 weapons in the current sandbox.

What is Next in the Coming Months?

Bungie has promised further information in the future. They should provide more updates, either through TWIDs or Destiny social channels. As for the game itself, March will see the return of Guardian Games for the first time post Edge of Fate. Following that will be the return of more frequent Iron Banner weeks, starting in April.

Delays Expected, But Will it Work?

The delays for Shadow and Order were inevitable. With the increasing leaks and Marathon’s release date, Bungie had to delay it. The initial leaks proposed a late May, early April delay, but what we got is worse. A three-month delay shows that they were not happy with what they were providing. Yes, Marathon had an impact, but that does not equate to three months.

Having the communication is great, but it feels way too late. If this information had been out sooner, maybe the community would have more faith. The other elephant in the room is the proposed roadmap. It has been several months since its announcement. Even now, with the delay of Shadow and Order, there is no word on the roadmap. Nowhere do they even mention when we will get access to it. Bungie has a lot of work to do in the coming months.

They need to restore some faith in the community with better communication. However, we have been in this position before. Promises get partially delivered, and then the community is heartbroken. One positive we can take from this announcement is as follows. The previous two delays, for Witch Queen and Final Shape, delivered top-tier expansions. Hopefully, the new update will match those levels.

Bungie has not announced the dates for the Shattered Cycle and the Alchemist. However, given the extensive delays to Shadow and Order, those expansions and updates will likely get their own delays. We might only see those coming in late 2026 or even in 2027.
