Chrono Trigger Remake 2026 Leak: Shocking Insider Claims Square Enix Is Reviving the Classic
Look, I’m not saying you should get your hopes up, but if you’re a JRPG fan who’s been waiting three decades for Square Enix to show Chrono Trigger some love, you might want to sit down for this one.
According to reliable industry insider John Harker, “Chrono stuff” is already in development at Square Enix. Yeah, you read that right. The legendary 1995 time-traveling adventure might finally be getting the modern treatment it deserves, and honestly, it’s about time.
The Leak That Started It All

The bombshell dropped during a ResetEra forum discussion about a Square Enix Team Asano survey. You know, one of those “which games do you want remade?” questionnaires that usually goes nowhere. Fans were throwing out their wish lists when Harker casually mentioned, “The chrono stuff is already in dev tho.”
Just like that, the internet exploded.
Harker went on to suggest fans ask for something else, like Triangle Strategy 2 or a proper Final Fantasy Tactics sequel. But let’s be real, nobody cared about that part. Everyone was too busy hyperventilating over the Chrono Trigger news.
What Kind of Remake Are We Talking About?
Here’s where things get interesting (and frustratingly vague). Harker didn’t specify what kind of remake we’re getting. Are we talking a full Final Fantasy 7-style 3D reimagining? Or maybe something in that gorgeous HD2D style that made Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy look so damn good?
The Chrono Trigger community is split on this one. Some fans argue the game’s puzzles would translate beautifully to 3D environments, giving players new ways to interact with those iconic time periods. Others insist the original’s pixel art charm is what made it special, and a remake should honor that aesthetic with a modern HD2D approach.
Both camps make solid points. The thought of exploring 600 A.D. or 2300 A.D. in full 3D is tantalizing, but there’s something sacred about those original sprites that hits different.
The Clues Were There All Along

If you’ve been paying attention, this leak isn’t coming completely out of left field. Square Enix has been dropping hints like breadcrumbs for months now.
Back in November 2025, during a YouTube stream celebrating Chrono Trigger’s 30th anniversary, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii got cornered with the million-dollar question: Is a remake happening? His response was delightfully suspicious. “I can’t say… You shouldn’t ask that! I’ll get told off!”
That’s not a “no,” folks. That’s the nervous laughter of someone who knows something they’re not supposed to talk about yet.
Then there was that Square Enix survey specifically asking fans how they’d want a Chrono Trigger remake handled. Companies don’t usually conduct market research on games they have zero intention of making. Just saying.
Why Now?
Chrono Trigger has been sitting in Square Enix’s vault for over 30 years, beloved but largely untouched beyond ports and mobile versions. The game is currently available on PC, SNES, mobile devices, and Nintendo DS, but none of those versions come close to what a proper remake could offer.
The timing makes sense when you consider Square Enix’s recent success with remakes and remasters. Final Fantasy 7 Remake proved there’s massive appetite for modernized classics, and the HD2D games have been critical darlings. Square Enix knows they’re sitting on gold here.
Plus, with the original creator team still around and willing to discuss the game publicly (even if they get flustered doing it), the stars seem aligned for something special.
The Waiting Game

Of course, there’s no official confirmation yet, no release date, no gameplay footage, nothing concrete. Just one insider’s forum post and a bunch of circumstantial evidence that keeps adding up.
But here’s the thing about video game leaks, they’re often smoke signaling a very real fire. John Harker has a solid track record with these things, and when you combine his comments with Horii’s reactions and Square Enix’s recent survey activity, it’s hard not to get excited.
The real question isn’t whether a Chrono Trigger remake is happening anymore. It’s when Square Enix will finally pull back the curtain and show us what they’ve been working on. And more importantly, whether they’ll do justice to one of the greatest JRPGs ever made.
For now, all we can do is wait and hope that Square Enix doesn’t mess this up. Because if they nail it, we’re talking about Game of the Year material. If they don’t, well, at least we’ll always have the original to time travel back to. I’m headed to start another new game+ on Chrono Trigger.
