The 2026 South African Overwatch World Cup Roster: A Dream Fulfiled
A couple of weeks ago, Blizzard began notifying the committees of their participation in the Overwatch World Cup. One of the countries that got accepted is South Africa. It is the second time in the country’s history that South Africa will participate in official Overwatch World Cup matches. As a South African citizen, I want to spotlight the committee and players in the upcoming months. One pivotal note: the Overwatch World Cup only allows seven players per roster. At the moment, the committee is waiting a player resolution before they announce the seven-player roster.

“An Italian South African born in Joburg, moved to Cape Town at 13. Later immigrated to the UK at 19 to pursue a pro career and participate in multiple contenders tournaments, as well as a few won LAN tournaments. My best achievements is top 8 in Europe and multiple Top 10 placements, as well as being the major scrim partner to Team Saudi Arabia, who in 2023 won the last World Cup. I would describe myself as a competitive, social person who enjoys the team dynamic of Overwatch. I’ve played video games all my life and it was my dream since young to make a career out of competing/youtube/twitch and now one day I wish to call myself the best player in the world.”
What excites you the most about representing South Africa in the OWCC?
“Simply put I just want to compete and try push South African esports. The last WC South Africa was apart of in 2019 I was too young to be part of at the time so it’s a big honour and opportunity. I think the average standard of play in South Africa is on par if not better than a lot of other regions, we just don’t have the infrastructure to support it.”
Stirling “Stirling” Luker – DPS

“My name is Stirling Luker, I was born and raised in Cape Town, where I still reside, and im 23 years old. I started playing Overwatch as my first FPS game in 2016, and it instantly ignited my competitive nature. I started competing in local tournaments in 2018. I attended my first LAN finals event at the age of 16, where I was frustrated to discover that we still had to play on EU servers with 180 ping. As a region, we have really struggled to get any support from Blizzard, even for major events with prize pools. As I grew as a player, I moved to other teams and attended more LAN events, notably the 2019 VS Gaming finals, and The Ethereal Crown LAN finals in 2024, where I won my first LAN event. In 2021, I took a break from Overwatch and competed in the local Apex Legends scene for a year, playing for the team Blind Peakers. I was known as “Aquatic” at the time. I was signed as a salaried player for Nibble Africa (known as Nibble Esports at the time), where we performed quite well, achieving 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in most major local events even when competing against more established teams. It was during this time that I discovered SkyPAD (now known as WALLHACK) and became extremely curious about their glass mouse pads, as I got really frustrated by how I interacted with cloth pads in South Africa’s warmer climate. I found playing on a glass pad to be a really good solution for my frustrations. I later became the first person in Africa to partner with SkyPAD and have been proudly representing them since 2023.”
What excites you the most about representing South Africa in the OWCC?
“I was too young to even trial for the team in 2019, and it’s been a dream to represent my country ever since… I’m extremely excited to put in the hard work and bring meaning to the slogan “No DNA, just RSA”.”

“I’m a 25-year-old living in Pretoria, South Africa. I have a degree in actuarial science and work as an actuarial consultant. I’ve always enjoyed playing games and have been playing Overwatch on and off since its release in 2016, first on console and then on PC. I only started to take Overwatch seriously near the middle of 2023 when I joined Inglorious Blasters (a local South African team comprising myself as well as 3 other players on the South African team, Condi, Stirling, and Zwoom). I started off as a flex dps and then moved into the hitscan role, but have mainly been a player that flexes onto both the hitscan and flex dps role due to having to fill a flexibility gap on Inglorious Blasters. I never had the intention of going pro in any video game. To be incredibly honest, I’ve always just enjoyed improvement and learning, and Overwatch allowed that to manifest through the team environments. I am incredibly grateful and honored to have the opportunity to represent my country through my hobby; never in a million years would I have expected my life path to end up here.”
What excites you the most about representing South Africa in the OWCC?
“I’m incredibly excited for the challenge and personal growth that I hope to experience through this whole process. Getting to LAN is going to be a challenge, but I’m so excited to tackle it with the incredible talent we have on the team. I can’t wait to learn as much as I can through the wonderful people on the team and the whole process.”

“I’m 22 and live in the UK, studying Linguistics and Japanese at university. I grew up in Joburg and moved out of South Africa when I was 15. I’ve been playing OW since 2016, the beta of OW1, and started out on PS4, then moved to pc sometime around S16. Peaked in the 2020 lockdown since I had infinite time to play. I’ve played every role on teams, but my favourites to play are HS and FS. Have been playing comp OW on and off since 2017/8; OW was my first competitive game. Got an aim coach and started working on my aim last year, which made the game a lot more fun. Outside of OW, I love Genshin Impact, started playing it in Feb 2025, and it’s probably my second most played game nowadays.”
What excites you the most about representing South Africa in the OWCC?
“It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to go back to South Africa, and before now I’ve never been a part of the ZA community in OW, despite it being my most played game, and I thought even if I wasn’t able to get onto the team, this would be my best shot at being involved with them. I’ve always wanted to be good enough to play at the pro level, and OWWC is such a cool opportunity.”

I dont know what to say im uncreative. I go to the gym regularly, and I love Carbonara. I work part-time at a South African butcher in London to connect more with my roots.”
What excites you the most about representing South Africa in the OWCC?

“I’m Melody, I’m 21, a frog PNGTuber and currently live in the UK, however I lived in ZA, Durban for most of my life. I started playing Overwatch in early 2021, originally first playing Flex DPS before moving over to Main Support, and eventually Flex Support too. I have played Overwatch at a Top 500 level for years, originally hitting Grandmaster in Overwatch 1 for the first time in 2022 as a Mercy one trick, then slowly expanding my hero pool to encompass all the supports. I’ve competed in FACEIT Advanced and Expert since Season 4 and have previously played alongside teammate “Karma” on a team called “The Kings Crows” back in Season 5 of FACEIT League Advanced EMEA. I first got my start in competitive Overwatch when I was invited to join a team called “Aquila” in mid 2021, eventually I outgrew that team and since then have competed on teams such as Aww Yass (which I still do) and Telacy Esports, currently competing in FACEIT League Expert with ELMT Rock. I also do Social Media Management for the North American organisation Hypnos and I do Observing and Media work for European organisation VanirQuick. I always wanted to try and compete at a high level in any game, originally starting with Fortnite, reaching Champion rank multiple times, then moving onto Apex Legends, peaking in Masters and playing against some of the regions best at the time, and now Overwatch. I never expected to get as far as I have and I am so grateful to all those who have supported me along my journey, notably “LordBoris”, “ArcaneHaze” and “Cointree”. I always wanted to compete in something big in Overwatch, and representing my home country as a player is something I still can’t properly fathom. I want to make everyone proud and do my country justice!”
What excites you the most about representing South Africa in the OWCC?
“I am so ecstatic to be able to compete in a tournament/competition that is as elite as the OWWC. I remember getting into Overwatch, watching 2019 World Cup Highlights, and being incredibly invested in the 2023 OWWC scene. Being able to say that I am also competing in this tournament, representing an entire nation, is truly incredible and an honour that I wish to live up to. I am also excited to play with new players, including people I’ve looked up to, and against other players, who are the best in their regions! It’s truly incredible to be a part of this team. I am eternally grateful, and I want to make the most of it through meeting new people, expanding my knowledge of the scene, and making a name for myself.”
