SoulStream Saga: Chapter 1 Prequel Demo – Should You Try It?
Indie developer After1mage 1nteractive launched a demo for their upcoming SoulStream Saga: Chapter 1 on March 31, 2026, a prequel to the full gameplay. The demo gives gamers a glimpse of the magic behind the curtain with max-level Astarius Valcrest. It features old-school 2D style pixel graphics and a smooth linear JRPG story, but is the demo worth a shot?
Prequel Demo Release
After having played the demo on Steam, one can see that the game has promise. While influenced by the likes of SNES and PlayStation from the 1990s to the early 2000s, it has its own styling and color palette. There is approximately an hour’s worth of gameplay to go through to get a feel for combat mechanics and figure out your own playstyle for the game. For keyboard users, tab opens the field menu for gear, magic and journal progress.
Some Interesting Battle

True to its description, it has shared Active Time Battle mechanics, meaning timing is everything, and so is character speed. Items and spells can both be utilized to increase speed, hopefully before the casting gets interrupted. This can be especially useful if the attacks are fast enough to stop the enemy from casting, saving Astarius from taking damage. Saving skills and potions for more difficult or tricky battles is highly recommended.
At the start, head southwest of the beginning to be confronted with the first battle against an assassin who is weak to fire. These crafty bad girls may very well flee from battle. This foe can also steal Astarius’ money! The only enemy more frustrating than the fleeing assassin is the alchemist who has elemental resistance to everything.
Intriguing And Captivating

Following the southwest path leads to an alchemist warrior. Don’t worry, this one isn’t a fight, but being able to trigger the dialog can be tricky. There is a glimpse of how grim the situation is in the prequel from the dialogue, though, before being brusquely told to go. Finding random treasure hidden in boxes and glowing blue spinning symbols is standard JRPG protocol, but some areas trigger interesting descriptions in certain areas. There will also be a slew of dead bodies everywhere! Don’t worry about the fires either, which happen to be all over the Scalded Forest.
As you progress through, there are bits and pieces of the story to follow and journal entries that serve as a reminder of what you need to do. I don’t want to spoil the demo, so I’ll leave with this: Heals can be used inside and outside of battle, like in Chrono Trigger and EarthBound. Use this information well!
The Drawbacks

As enjoyable as the game demo was, it is obvious that it was rushed out. Wanting to fuel interest in the game, especially for a small indie team, is normal. They even said the release will have players encountering issues and or bugs, though the most glaring one is the “save” function that doesn’t actually save progress. While playing the game, do not tab away. Trying to get back to the game after tabbing out may sometimes result in the screen not changing back to the game at all.
The trigger space around an object that can be interacted with or a person to be spoken to does not seem wide enough, or perhaps the marker is just disappearing too quickly. A few times, it required moving back and forth and hitting the interact key as soon as the ! or ? appeared.
These are all minor quibbles, of course, since the demo currently offers only about an hour of gameplay. Many will be able to finish it in one sitting if they use their skills and potions wisely. The last issue is more of a personal problem, as I found the font style to be a bit rough in the dialog bubbles. The rest of the game font was perfectly readable and fine. I did enjoy the story they gave for the demo and look forward to what they fully release.
Overall, I would say the team definitely has a bright future if the full game sees these minor quibbles squashed with its planned 40 hours of gameplay. To those interested in old-school style JRPGs with depth of story and dark aesthetics, I would give them a shot. Drop any criticism or bug feedback in its Discord server or on its Steam page.
