Frank Author Lawson and the victim were embroiled in a heated disagreement about who was next in line at the Spinx gas station on The Parkway. The incident got worse when Lawson pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim in the throat, and the victim was unarmed. “The victim survived due to the quick response of Greenville EMS and the medical professionals at Prisma”, said the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
The 64-year-old attacker pleaded guilty to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime last Monday. This isn’t Lawson’s first run-in with the law, where he has some criminal history. He pleaded guilty to simple common law assault back in January 1989, and in 2028, he pleaded guilty after he had stolen goods worth $2,000 or less.
Sergeant Shannon McHale of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation and eventually brought Frank Lawson to justice. In South Carolina, Assault and Battery of a High and Aggravated Nature is a felony, which carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison. For the charge, it is either the infliction of bodily harm/injury or an act accomplished by means likely to produce death or great bodily injury.
In addition, possession of a weapon during a violent crime in South Carolina usually carries a mandatory five-year prison sentence, and it can be served consecutively. According to Deputies, they responded to the Spinx around 10 a.m. on a Sunday when the victim was stabbed in the throat. Lawson and the victim did not know each other before the incident. After Lawson was arrested, he was held in the Greenille County Detention Center on no bond.
