FernGully: The Last Rainforest Re-Releases On Hulu

FernGully

Along with their visually appealing styles, strong characters, and exciting stories, many animated films have strong messages, and FernGully: The Last Rainforest is no exception. Premiering in 1992, the 20th Century Fox movie not only starred mesmerizing characters and had catchy songs, but it also taught viewers about nature and humanity’s impact on the ecosystem.

The movie was moderately successful in theaters and gained a massive following afterward. Though many modern audiences have probably never seen this film, they’ll have a chance to experience it when FernGully comes to Hulu on September 1.

A Rainforest Full of Fairies

Set in an Australian rainforest, FernGully: The Last Rainforest follows a fairy named Crysta who accidentally shrinks a human logger named Zak while exploring a logging operation. Over the course of the movie, the pair bond: Zak shares his knowledge of humans, while Crysta teaches him the way of nature. In the movie’s B-plot, Hexxus, a being of destruction, is released from his prison; he merges with a massive logging machine and makes his way to FernGully to destroy it.

The movie’s cast featured many talented actors whose performances made it a cult classic, including Samantha Mathis, Jonathan Ward, Christian Slater, and Grace Zabriskie. Robin Williams provided the voice for Batty Koda, the wisecracking bat who hates humans; FernGully was William’s first animated role before becoming the genie in AladdinHexxus was brought to life by Tim Curry, who gave the character a menacing tone. Both Williams and Curry also provided the singing voices for their characters.

A Movie With a Message

FernGully: The Last Rainforest was made with a specific purpose. Motivated by his love for the environment and inspired by the stories written by his former wife, Diana Young, the film’s producer, Wayne Young, wanted to inspire change in the logging industry to set new regulations. The movie showcased the dangers of overlogging and deforestation brought on by human greed. It even demonstrated how ignorant humans can be towards the damage they do.

Young was careful not to make the movie preachy while conveying his intended lesson; by doing so, the movie was able to capture the attention of younger viewers while also reaching older ones. Following the movie’s box office success, profits from the film were put to good use in donations to Greenpeace, the Rainforest Foundation Fund, the Sierra Club, and even a Smithsonian Institution fund for worldwide environmental projects. Though the exact amounts of these donations are unknown, they show how the people who created the movie worked towards making the world a better place.

Wrapping Up: FernGully Coming to a Newer Generation

It is a shame that younger generations have not seen FernGully: The Last Rainforest; however, that will soon change because the movie is coming to Hulu this year. Modern audiences will be able to experience the movies’ iconic characters and music for the first time. The movie will also help spread the lesson of ecological conservation to younger minds. Hopefully, the movie can bring about good change like it did in 1992. The magical adventure FernGully: The Last Rainforest will arrive on Hulu on September 1.
