Extreme Makeover: Woman Transformed by Christ Not Conformed to the Culture is a 2011 book by noted author and television personality Teresa Tomeo. Tomeo has a disturbing past, but in Extreme Makeover: Woman Transformed by Christ Not Conformed to the Culture she uses it for God’s glory.

Tomeo is an EWTN radio and television host who was once an ambitious, feminist news broadcaster, climbing to the top. But the world let her down, and she used this letdown to help her get to heaven. In Extreme Makeover: Woman Transformed by Christ Not Conformed to the Culture.  Tomeo’s professional success in the secular broadcast field came at a price. “The road on which I was traveling–this way of thinking only about me, myself, and I–helped me gain a good deal of professional success,” she states, “but it would also almost cost me my marriage–and more important, my soul.”

The conversion process began after the author lost her job just when she thought she was on the brink of great success. This story is in the book, and is not always the way it happens. It was Tomeo’s husband, Dominick, who took the first step by recognizing their spiritual dysfunction, and they joined a Bible study. Tomeo struggled with her emotional pain for months until it finally drove her to her knees. “So, one day, out of desperation, I simply looked at the crucifix hanging on our bedroom wall and asked God to take over my life,” she recalls.

That began a journey deep into the heart of the Catholic Church for her. Tomeo’s broken marriage healed as she and Dominick grew in understanding that the Church understood marriage and commitment far better than the culture did. Together, they peeled away the cultural deception and found treasure, the truth that has always been taught by the Church.

Since that time, Tomeo has used her own story to save others from the pain that results from our culture. She hopes her book will save women, Tomeo states. “There have been more than fifty million abortions in the United States since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. Sexually transmitted diseases are at epidemic proportions, with nineteen million new STD infections each year in the country. The divorce rate in the United States is double that of other developed nations; nearly 40 percent of all children and 70 percent of African American children are born out of wedlock.”

Depressing American Statistics

There have been more than 65 million abortions in the United States since the Roe v. Wade decision. Sexual promiscuity is a big problem in this country. In Extreme Makeover: Woman Transformed by Christ Not Conformed to the Culture, Tomeo says there are more than 19 million sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that on any given day, around one in five people in the United States has a sexually transmitted disease (STD). The divorce rate in the United States, according to the Census Bureau is 44.6%.  These are all scourges upon marriage and affronts to God.

Conclusion

Extreme Makeover: Woman Transformed by Christ Not Conformed to the Culture is an inspirational 2011 book about a woman’s journey from the depths to find God. This is a tale about girl power.
