Everybody Hates Chris Returns As A Cartoon

Tyler James Williams, Imani Hakim, and Tequan Richmond for Everybody Hates Chris

It’s been fifteen years since Everybody Hates Chris, the CW comedy that captivated multiple generations, ended. Ever since its premiere in 2005, this show has somehow remained culturally relevant. While many fans were disappointed by the show’s end, they were satisfied with its original run overall and there wasn’t much call for a reboot or spin-off. Recently, though, an animated reboot of the beloved comedy has been officially confirmed. Here’s everything we know about the new reboot so far.

The Story Behind Everybody Hates Chris

Everybody Hates Chris is an autobiographical TV show about comedian/actor Chris Rock. The show follows a young Chris growing up in Brooklyn with his parents and two siblings. We follow the main character as he navigates life as a teenager in the 1980s with bullies, siblings who seem only to want to get him in trouble, and a father dedicated to pinching every penny. While Tyler James Williams played the younger version of him, Chris Rock narrated each episode of the show, his internal monologue giving us insight into his thoughts on every part of his life.

Everyone in his life seems to be out to get him, from his teacher to kids at school, his siblings, and even his parents. He felt that everyone hated him, hence the title. The show is hilarious and heartwarming. Everybody Hates Chris was nominated for multiple Emmys and won an NAACP Image Award.

What We Know About The Animated Series

News of an animated reboot was first announced in 2002. The show will be called Everybody Still Hates Chris and will feature some of the original cast members voicing the main characters. Tichina Arnold and Terry Crews have been confirmed to return to the roles of Chris’ parents; however, the voices of Chris and his siblings, Tonya and Drew, will not be returning. The official reason for the kids’ actors not returning is that they’re now all adults; although adults voice many child characters, these three actors are not professional voice actors and thus do not feel able to voice kids.

The new cast will include Ozioma Akagha as Tonya, Terrence Little Gardenhigh as Drew, Gunner Sizemore as Chris’ best friend Greg, and Tim Johnson Jr. as Chris. Some of these cast members are professional voice actors: Akagha lent her voice to Teen Titans Go! on Cartoon Network, while Johnson Jr. voiced Will on the Hulu animated kids’ show Fright Krewe. Chris Rock also returns to narrate the mishaps of his childhood self, claiming that he’s “excited to introduce the world to another funny side” of his childhood. So it sounds like we will get all new stories, not just animated versions of the original episodes.

Public Reaction To The Reboot

Fans had mixed reactions to the news of the animated reboot. As they often feel with most reboots of classic shows, many fans feel that good shows like Everybody Hates Chris should be left alone and not have anything further added to them, including reboots. Some fans would have also preferred Rock’s story to continue with Williams playing a twenty-something Chris.

On the other hand, many fans are excited about the new show. As they loved the original show, many want to swim in nostalgia for a bit by watching the new version. Crews’ and Arnold’s reprisals of their roles have also seemed to give potential audience members more confidence that the new series will hold up well. Others find Chris Rock’s comedy entertaining in any format and will enjoy anything he puts out.

Conclusion

Everybody Still Hates Chris is set to premiere later this year. Although no specific release date has been given yet and it’s unclear how the show will be rated, the show will premiere on Comedy Central first and arrive on Paramount+ later. While fans of the original Everybody Hates Chris are split on whether to watch the new show, the presence of Chris Rock, the cast of talented original and new cast members, and the aim to tell new stories about Rock’s childhood all provide some excitement about the reboot.
