Epic Games Store is an online video game shop that hosts a variety of games for PC, Mac, and mobile. Console gamers, sadly, do not have access to the store. Each week since 2019, Epic has released free games that any user of their store is able to download for the device the game is compatible with, typically PC and occasionally mobile. Of course, Epic also offers pages of free games year-round, including Apex Legends, Asphalt Legends, Fortnite, and Genshin Impact. Not every player likes every available game, but every player should like free stuff. So what is here for the week of May 29 – June 5?
Epic Games Store: Next Pair of Free Games
For this week, Epic Games Store has officially made available two games for its users, both for PC. The two games are nearly polar opposites of each other, yet could have the potential to reach popularity with a wide range of gamers. The two games are Deathloop, developed by Arkane Lyon, and Ogu and the Secret Forest, developed by Moonlab and Sinkhole Studio. The former is a well-received, critically acclaimed FPS, and the latter is a 2D indie adventure game with a solid rating but modest following. The latter was released on Epic Games earlier on June 5, making the free offering a day one release, despite the game itself launching in 2024.
Deathloop is definitely the bigger name of the two. It earned critical acclaim for its many unique FPS gameplay mechanics. The roguelike elements were fun and well-balanced, making it accessible for players. PvP missions, creative combat, and abilities round out the game’s strengths. Deathloop originally released for PS5 in 2021 and was considered one of the best releases of the year, with Xbox fans equally excited in 2022. It even received a 92% recommendation rate on Open Critic, with an overall 88 average score. Typically $59.99, getting the game for free on Epic Games Store is a massive boon.
Ogu and the Secret Forest is a 2D adventure game and is largely seen by users as an under-the-radar gem. According to Game Rant, “According to SteamDB data, Moonlab and Sinkhole Studio’s 2D adventure peaked at 1,070 concurrent Steam players shortly following its summer 2024 launch—a decent figure for an indie title that indicates its overall sales are in the tens of thousands. Ogu and the Secret Forest presently holds ‘Very Positive’ reviews on Valve’s storefront, based on over 1,500 player impressions.” Currently around $19.99; you can grab it on the Epic Games Store for free.
