The trailer for “Scary Movie 6” was released this week, and no one is safe from the Wayans brothers’ comedic pen. Over the weekend, the trailer leaked, but Paramount has now released the official trailer, and from the responses online, summer is not coming fast enough. The “Scary Movie 6” trailer parodies popular horror movies like “Sinners,” “M3gan,” and of course “Scream,” and pokes fun at the current political climate.

Parody Power Returns Fearlessly

The next installment in the “Scary Movie” franchise is on it’s way, and based on the first trailer, the movie’s parody comes from “Scream,” “M3gan,” “Halloween,” “Sinners,” “Get Out,” “Weapons,” “Longlegs,” “The Substance,” “Terrifier,” and “Smile.” Racism, political parties, and gender pronouns are joked about in the trailer, which could spark backlash from movie critics closer to the movie’s premiere.

With the excitement from the “Scary Movie 6” trailer, Marlon Wayans announced the movie will be released a week earlier. The original date was Friday, June 12th, but now the new date is Friday, June 5th.

The return of the Wayans brothers and a majority of the original cast from the first movie is enough to get fans to buy tickets after waiting over 10 years. But many YouTube users’ comments under the video agree that “Scary Movie 6” is a funny movie that the world needs.

One fan wrote, “I HOPE EVERYONE IS OFFENDED!!!!!” Followed by another fan wrote, “I can’t say how badly this world needs this movie, especially in this 2026.”

The love continued to pour as one YouTube user wrote, “The world needs the early 2000s, it starts here.” And finally, to sum up the reaction from fans for the “Scary Movie 6” trailer, captioned by one social media user, who wrote, “Society not only NEEDS this right now. We are way overdue for it. Thank you!!!”

Blink-and-Miss Horror References

By watching the “Scary Movie 6” trailer, you can not predict the storyline, but the video did drop several Easter eggs.

For instance, the trailer opens with a passenger on a subway train resembling Jasmin Savoy Brown, and her scene in “Scream 6” when she is attacked on the subway. Surrounded by people dressed as horror-movie killers like Jason and Leatherface, a M3GAN look-alike doll starts dancing toward the passenger, revealing herself to be Ghostface.

When Cindy (Anna Faris) is introduced, she has messy, washed-out blonde hair and is off the grid. People connected the dots quickly; she is referencing Jamie Lee Curtis in the last two “Halloween” movies. Brenda (Regina Hall) has a black, bangs-curl bob like Octavia Spencer in “Ma.”

There is a reference to “Sinners” when a trio of a man and two women show up at a house party, trying to get invited in. Children running down the streets with their arms spread like an airplane is obviously a nod to “Weapons,” and when Ghostface injects a victim with “the stuff,” it’s clearly parodying “The Substance.”

And last, the Santa in the mall is a nod to the killer prankster clown, Art, from the “Terrifier.”

Behind the Franchise Fallout Drama

“Scary Movie” premiered in the 2000s as a parody of “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” created by the Wayans Brothers. But after the second movie, fans noticed a difference in the script and humor. The brothers were fired from their project over a contract agreement, and Marlon Wayans even accused the studio of stealing their idea for the third movie.

In an interview with Shannon Sharpe on the Club Shay Shay podcast, Wayans explained that the disagreement in the contract was that they wanted to underpay the brothers after the success of the first two movies.

He even confirms to Sharpe again that the “Scary Movie” franchise was stolen. Wayans states, “They took the franchise from us, took it from us. And then they stole the idea for the third one. They took it from us and gave it to somebody else because we couldn’t make a deal.”

Laugh Loud or Stay Home

If you are unfamiliar with the “Scary Movie” franchise or any of the movies mentioned above, you still have time to watch them. The storylines and parodies in each “Scary Movie” are different, but they share recurring characters like Cindy and Brenda that tie the stories together. But if you do not have a good sense of humor or are easily offended, do not watch “Scary Movie 6” in theaters this summer.
