Golden Globes: The 5 Awesome Composers Nominated for Best Original Score

When discussing the Golden Globes, many people focus on the Best Picture awards and the acting categories, but the Best Original Score award deserves more focus. A movie’s score carries the film’s mood, subtly influencing how the audience feels while watching the film. Anyone who’s ever hummed the Imperial March from the “Star Wars” series or James Bond’s theme music knows the power of a film’s music. Here are this year’s nominees for the Best Original Score Golden Globe.

“Frankenstein”

Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of the “Frankenstein” story has five Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture (Drama), Best Director, and, of course, Best Original Score. The score was composed by Alexandre Desplat. Desplat has been nominated for Golden Globes fifteen previous times, including Best Original Score and Best Original Song nominations for Guillermo Del Toro’s animated “Pinocchio” adaptation. He also won two Oscars for “The Shape of Water” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

“F1”

This racing movie stars Brad Pitt, Damson Idris and Javier Bardem, and it’s nominated for two Golden Globes – Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Original Score. The score was composed by Hans Zimmer, who has a massive composing history. He now has a total of seventeen Golden Globe nominations, with wins for “The Lion King,” “Gladiator,” and “Dune: Part One.” He won Oscars for “The Lion King” and “Dune: Part One.”

“One Battle After Another”

Paul Thomas Anderson’s dark comedy starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn won Best Picture and Best Director at the Critics’ Choice Awards. It has nine Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Director, and several acting nominations. The score was composed by Jonny Greenwood, lead guitarist and keyboardist of Radiohead. He has previously been nominated for two Golden Globes for “The Power of the Dog” and “Phantom Thread.”

“Sirat”

This Spanish movie is also nominated for Best Motion Picture – Non-English-Language, and it stars Sergi Lopez, Bruno Nunez Arjona and Stefania Gadda. Kangding Ray composed the score, and this is his first Golden Globe nomination. “Sirat” is only his second film score, with his first being “Wan kommst du meine Wunden kussn.”

“Sinners”

Sinners” took the world by storm last year, and the award shows have reflected that hype. It has seven Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture (Drama), Best Director, and both music awards. Not only is it nominated for Best Original Score, but the song “I Lied to You” is nominated for Best Original Song. The score was composed by Ludwig Goransson, who now has six Golden Globe nominations. He is probably best-known for composing the scores for the two “Black Panther” films, and he received Golden Globe nominations for both.

“Hamnet”

“Hamnet” tells the story of William Shakespeare’s family, particularly how he loses his young son. It stars Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal. The film is nominated for six Golden Globes, including Best Picture (Drama) and Best Director. The score was composed by Max Richter, and this is his first Golden Globe nomination. He is also known for composing the scores for “Arrival,” “Ad Astra,” and “Waltz with Bashir.”

And the Golden Globe Goes To . . .

The award went to Ludwig Goransson for “Sinners,” although sadly, the award’s presentation wasn’t broadcasted on CBS, which is an injustice to the nominated composers. The nominees are full of talented composers, each of whom was well deserving of the award. The next time you watch a movie, pay attention to the score. Observe how the music is enhancing the atmosphere and affecting your emotions, and remember that talented composers come up with every note. Hopefully, next year’s Best Original Score Award will be broadcast.
