Danny Boyle will receive the Gotham Director Tribute at the 2026 Gotham Awards, the 36th edition of the Gotham Film Awards, on Nov. 30 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York, Deadline reported. The tribute honors filmmakers whose work has made a lasting mark on contemporary cinema.

Four decades of filmmaking

The honor spans a career of roughly 40 years. Boyle won the Oscar for best director in 2009 for “Slumdog Millionaire,” which took home eight Oscars in all, including best picture. His other films include “Shallow Grave,” “Trainspotting,” “28 Days Later,” “127 Hours,” “Steve Jobs,” “T2 Trainspotting,” “Yesterday” and, most recently, “28 Years Later.”

Boyle also directed the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

‘Ink’ arrives ahead of the 2026 Gotham Awards

His latest film, “Ink,” opened the Venice Film Festival in September. It hits theaters Dec. 11 and arrives on Netflix on Jan. 8, 2027. Jack O’Connell, Guy Pearce and Claire Foy star in the drama, which follows Rupert Murdoch’s 1969 launch of The Sun and the birth of modern British tabloid journalism. Pearce plays Murdoch.

‘One of the true auteurs of his generation’

Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of the Gotham Film & Media Institute, praised Boyle in a statement: “Across four decades, Danny Boyle has established himself as one of the true auteurs of his generation. From the energy and urgency of ‘Shallow Grave’ and ‘Trainspotting’ to the achievements of ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ ‘127 Hours’ and ‘Steve Jobs,’ he has consistently brought a singular voice and perspective to the screen. With ‘Ink,’ Danny once again proves his ability to take a compelling story and make it feel wholly cinematic.”

When the 2026 Gotham Awards happen

The ceremony takes place Nov. 30 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York. Nominees will be announced Oct. 27.

Boyle was the second honoree announced for the 2026 Gotham Awards, following stop-motion animation studio Laika, the company behind “Wildwood,” which was named the recipient of the Anniversary Tribute. The Gothams are among the first major ceremonies of the film awards season, arriving ahead of the guild awards and the Oscars.
