A Nova Scotia judge on Thursday, Oct. 1, dismissed the Mike Smith sexual assault case after Crown prosecutors declined to present any evidence, ending the trial of the actor best known as Bubbles on “Trailer Park Boys” on its first day, The Hollywood Reporter reported, citing CBC News.

Smith, who pleaded not guilty, had faced one count of sexual assault, the only charge in the Mike Smith sexual assault case. Judge Jill Hartlen halted the three-day trial in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, after the Crown’s announcement, according to THR.

How the Mike Smith sexual assault case ended

Because the Crown offered no evidence, Smith’s defense moved to dismiss the charge, and the motion was granted, Global News reported. Defense lawyer Stan MacDonald told the outlet that Smith “is happy to put this behind him.”

The complainant, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, said in a statement that she was “unwilling to sacrifice my mental health” by testifying, CBC News reported, according to THR.

Smith was charged on Oct. 2, 2025, in connection with an alleged incident on Dec. 30, 2017, in Dartmouth, Consequence reported when the charge became public that November. The allegation at the center of the Mike Smith sexual assault case was never tested at trial.

Smith returns to Trailer Park Boys Inc.

Trailer Park Boys Inc., the Nova Scotia company behind the franchise, confirmed the outcome in a statement. “The court has dismissed the charge against Michael Smith, concluding the legal proceedings that began in October 2025 regarding an allegation dating to December 2017,” the company said, per THR.

“Now that he is cleared of this matter, Mike is resuming his responsibilities with Trailer Park Boys Incorporated,” the statement added.

Smith stepped back as the company’s managing director after he was charged, and Gary Howsam took over those duties, according to Consequence. Smith, John Paul Tremblay (Julian) and Robb Wells (Ricky) acquired the show in 2013 and are the company’s directors. When the charge first became public, the company said it was aware of the allegation and took it seriously, The Canadian Press reported.
