“Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers
Although the Righteous Brothers didn’t write this, they made this famous from their 1965 recording. One of the most played and cherished love songs, this has been in movies and covered by numerous artists. Fun fact: this song was actually written for a 1955 prison movie called “Unchained.” It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song from a movie. The film “Ghost” brought renewed interest to this romantic piece.
“Love You Anyway” by Luke Combs
Is it sappy? Yes, a little. Is it meaningful? Definitely. Is there romantic fiddle playin’? Yep. We love Comb’s beautiful ballad he wrote for his wife Nicole. The song talks about her being the true north on a compass, giving him purpose and direction. Released just before Valentine’s Day in 2023, the romantic song climbed the charts quickly and it remained on top. In fact, it competed against his cover of Tracy Chapman‘s “Fast Car.”
“Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel
It’s hard to believe this charming love song almost didn’t make the cut on Billy Joel’s 1977 album, The Stranger. Joel himself and his band were not super fond of it. After a little bit of coaxing from friend Linda Ronstadt, it was finally added to the album. We’re glad he did – as the song ended up winning two Grammy awards. Inspired by his wife at the time, Elizabeth Weber, Joel said he didn’t play it much after the two got divorced.
“Faithfully” by Journey
One of rock’s greatest power ballads, sung by one of rock’s greatest voices easily puts this in our list of five best love songs for Valentine’s Day. Singer Steve Perry didn’t write this – keyboardist Jonathan Cain did. Cain stated he had started with the lyric “highway run into the midnight sun” and completed the music in record time. He later said the melody had come to him in a dream. Imagine a dream like that! We really gotta work on our dreams.
“Endless Love” by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross
What happens when you put two formidable powerhouse R&B vocalists together? This chart-topping song! Lionel Richie of the Commodores wrote and produced this masterpiece for the movie of the same name. Singer Diana Ross provided vocals for this duet. Ross and Richie’s version was named Billboard’s greatest duet song of all time. Later in 1994 this song was covered by Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey. .
