FX’s most recent comedy series, English Teacher, is part of a long tradition of workplace comedies that have been the backbone of sitcoms for decades. By providing a comedic look at the daily struggles of a 9-to-5 job, sitcoms set in work environments give viewers a sense of relatability to the show’s plots, characters, and humor. As evidenced by the recent comeback in workplace comedies with ABC’s Abbott Elementary, following the day-to-day lives of teachers provides not only good entertainment but also a comedic look at what today’s educators are facing in classrooms.
The Story of English Teacher
English Teacher follows Evan Marquez, played by Brian Jordan Alverez, who also created the show. Evan is a gay English teacher who struggles to meet the demands of his high school students and their parents, along with his fellow teachers. He finds himself under investigation after a parent reports him for kissing his boyfriend. Set in Austin, Texas, where there has been recent tension amongst schools and parents regarding LGBTQ+ faculty and books, English Teacher sheds a more comedic light on these more difficult times but doesn’t shy away from these trying and sometimes controversial topics.
Alongside Alverez, Stephanie Koenig stars as fellow teacher Gwen Sanders, Sean Patton as gym teacher Markie Hillridge, and Enrico Colantoni as Principal Grant Moretti. Musician Aliyah’s Interlude also has small role as one of Evan’s students, Tiffany. Popular drag queen Trixie Mattel also guest stars in the first season’s second episode, “Powderpuff,” as Evan Marquez’s old friend Shazam. In the episode, Shazam’s recruited to teach the school’s football team how to properly and respectfully perform in drag in preparations for the school’s upcoming powderpuff game.
How To Watch English Teacher
New episodes of English Teacher premiere on FX on Mondays at 10 p.m. Eastern Time. After their premiere, episodes are available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ and to purchase on Apple TV and Prime Video. Episodes can also be streamed on ABC and YouTube Premium Subscriptions.
Final Thoughts
Although only three episodes of the show have aired so far, English Teacher is quickly rising up to meet the standards of past and present workplace comedies. While shining a light on the modern issues teachers and school faculty members face today, the show also looks at the whole picture and tries to find places where everyone can meet somewhere in the middle.
With more episodes to come, it’s safe to say English Teacher is another show that many will love and that will become a time capsule of the mid-2020s. Though there haven’t been plans announced for a second season, as the show continues and finds its audience it will hopefully make a comeback for another season.
