Another season of television has come to an end, and you know what that means! It’s time for the Emmy Awards 2024 nominations. While last year’s awards were delayed due to the historic SAG and WGA strikes, this year’s awards are set to air on time, assuming all goes according to plan. Although the 2023 Emmy Awards were just held in January, the 2024 ceremony is set to take place later this year, in September. So, who were among the lucky few who received nominations this year? Who is Eligible for The Emmy Awards 2024?
Per the Television Academy rules, only shows that aired between June 1st, 2023, and May 31st, 2024, are eligible for nomination in 2024. For limited or anthology series, a show must have aired at least six episodes before May 31st to be eligible for nomination. For example, shows like Bridgerton, which was released this year in two parts, only releasing four episodes before May 31st, as well as series like House of the Dragon and The Boys, which didn’t air any episodes until June of this year, are all ineligible for competition at this year’s awards. The Bear Season 3 is also ineligible for this year’s awards. However, Season 2 of the FX hit is eligible and nominated.
Furthermore, according to Deadline, in order for an actor to be nominated in the Guest Actor/Actress categories, they must have appeared for at least 5% of the episode’s run time in which they are guest starring. To describe the criteria, the publication states, “Although actress Olivia Colman is not eligible for The Crown, she absolutely is for her longer Season 2 guest turn on The Bear, while other The Crown returning guest star Claire Foy did make the Emmy timing cut.”
While Colman’s episode of The Crown did air within the eligibility range, she did not actually appear onscreen for long enough to be eligible for a Guest Actress nomination. Typically, nominations are broken down by category, with shows constituted as comedies, dramas, limited or anthology series, and reality TV programming eligible for nominations. The Bear had a record-breaking number of nominations this year, securing 23 nods from the Academy, the most for any comedy series ever. However, some believe this to be unfair, feeling that The Bear should compete in the drama categories instead of the comedy ones. Nonetheless, this year’s nominees are as follows:

Calls for More Inclusivity at the Emmy Awards:

Last year, there was a lot of scrutiny and calls for more inclusion surrounding the Emmy Awards as a whole, with many quick to point out how the same handful of shows seem to be nominated across categories. For example, of the eight potential spots in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category, the nominations extended to those on only one of two shows: The White Lotus and Succession.
One X user (formerly Twitter) was quick to point out the Television Academy’s clear biases, stating, “Only nominating actors from TWO SHOWS in a category of EIGHT is so disrespectful to other working actors. Where do the Emmys go from here? Because this should not happen again. There’s obviously something wrong.” Another user called for voters to broaden their horizons on which shows they nominate, pointing out how the same networks and shows seem to monopolize certain categories year after year.
Gender Inclusivity Discussed
In addition to these obvious biases, there have also been calls in the past few years to incorporate gender-neutral categories at Hollywood’s biggest awards shows. The argument for this is that nonbinary and gender non-conforming performers are currently unable to compete at these types of awards. With the categories’ current recognition of only two genders, these performers are limited in terms of nomination opportunities.
Many are trying to convince Hollywood to adopt gender-neutral categories; for example, rather than having Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series and Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series categories, the Academy could implement just a generic Best Guest in a Comedy Series category. Hopefully, with enough public outcry, we’ll begin to see more inclusion across all award shows going forward.
