Elio Final Trailer: Pixar’s New Movie Looks to Deliver Humor and Heart

Elio

Elio, the next animated movie by Pixar, hits theaters June 20. It tells the story of Elio, a young boy who is obsessed with aliens. Of course, he ends up taken by aliens and forming an unlikely friendship with a young alien named Glordon. The final trailer for the film dropped today, and it looks like the movie will be full of Pixar’s trademark quirky humor and deep emotion.

The Elio Trailer

The trailer shows Elio skipping school, which panics his aunt Olga. She sends him to camp in hopes of helping him do better, but of course, things don’t go as planned. As Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” plays in the background, Elio is beamed into space, where a cute blob-like alien probes his nose for a DNA sample. He is welcomed into an organization of different aliens, and he interacts with a “universal user’s manual.” The aliens are attacked by the crab-like villain Lord Grigon, who is Glordon’s father, and he volunteers to negotiate with him. The trailer also shows the alien chaos reaching Earth, meaning that he and Glordon will likely have to save multiple worlds.

Trailer Highlights

Pixar has always been known for their sense of humor, and it looks like this film will be rich with it. For example, when Elio is talking to the “universal user’s manual,” he asks, “Who would win in a fight: one gorilla with a baseball bat, or ten chimps?” The film also looks like it will continue Pixar’s tradition of tackling deep issues in an accessible way. Elio is shown fiddling with a desk ornament and wearing a blanket as a cape, indicating that he possibly has a mental condition like autism or ADHD. He also wears an eye patch.

What Disability Does Elio Have?

The eye patch might indicate that he has amblyopia, also known as “lazy eye,” where one eye is weaker than the other. Another interesting aspect is that Glordon doesn’t seem to have any eyes at all. This could mean that Elio and Glordon will bond over their vision difficulties.

The film features the voices of Yonas Kibreab, Zoe Saldaña, Remy Edgerly, and Brad Garrett. It is directed by Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and Adrian Molina. The trailer’s visuals look gorgeous, and the humor feels fresh. This will almost definitely be another winner in Pixar’s stellar lineup.
