When was the last time you walked barefoot along the water line on a warm sunny beach feeling the earthy sand between your toes? How able taking a walk through a park or even your back yard feeling the soil warm on your bare feet. How many of you enjoying laying flat on the ground watching the cloud float by high in the sky? Does it make you feel calm and relaxed? Ever wonder why?
Earthing. Mystery or Myth?

What is Earthing you ask? Earthing is the practice of making contact with the earth through touching the ground with as little between your skin and the ground as possible. I know when I am feeling stressed or just done with the day, a barefoot walk in the woods where I live feels like it makes all of my problems go away, or at least makes be better able to deal with them. It’s relaxing and makes you feel connected. Could there be more to it then this.
According to Oschman’s research report with the National Library of Medicine, earthing or connecting directly with the soil, rocks, or water can have many physiological benefits to your bodies including it’s effects on “inflammation, immune responses, healing wounds, even for preventing and treating chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases (Oschman, 2015).”
In another article, Chevalier points out that not only does this type of connection with the earth benefit both or mental and physical health, it is possible that our disconnect with the earth as move rush and move throughout our days may actually be having a negative effect on both our mental and physical health. “The research suggests that this disconnect may be a major contributor to physiological dysfunction and unwellness. (Chevalier, 2012)”
For fear of this starting to sound like a research paper, I will leave the details at that. If you would like to read more on the research, please do so by clicking the links above. However, I believe that the key to humans finding a way to a healthier self might be to reconnect to out mother earth, spend time out in nature.
Mystery or myth? I don’t think it is either. I feel that the current research shows that there is definitely proof showing that our connection to the earth is definitely beneficial of not necessary for our own health, not only mentally but physically. What does the research noted and linked to this article tell you?
What Does This All Mean for US?

Get outside! Walk barefoot on the grass. Go to the beach and connect with the sand and the water. Dance barefoot, run and play, or just find a quiet place to lie and meditate, read a book, or just watch the clouds pass by overhead while your body replenishes it’s energy supply and your mind can reset. Who couldn’t use a little down time, even if only for 15 minutes at a time.
What happens when you practice Earthing? In simple terms, you let you ground yourself connecting with the electrons present in the soil. You are exchanging electrons, specifically the negative electrons that ground you, improving your internal rhythms. Because we spend so much time away from our connection with the nature, we could actually be experiencing an electron deficiency (Menigo, 2019).
How do others make this ever so important connection? Dancing. running, meditation, take a nap in the back yard (please remember the sunscreen though), build a sand castle at the beach, take a hike in the mountains, walk through a local park. Let your skin touch the earth, soak up those electrons, reset your inner rhythms, reset your mental attitude and move on with your day.
If you are interested in more information about Earthing and how people are now working to fit renewing our connection to our mother earth, watch for my next Resetting Your Internal Rhythms Article later this week.
