Directive 8020 is one of the most anticipated horror games upcoming in 2025, and more information about what to expect came as part of the Future Games Showcase on June 7. The game is part of The Dark Pictures Anthology by Supermassive Games, focused on a space mission that has gone horribly wrong. In the latest reveal, fans got to learn about a brand new feature, known as Turning Point, that could be a revolutionary new gameplay function that changes how people view horror games such as this one.

Directive 8020 has been catching players’ eyes for a while now, as the next entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology, due to its trademark atmospheric horror. Essentially, the series is entering its second season, which has made a name for itself through survival horror, where players greatly impact the game through the choices they make. Each game represents a different subcategory within the horror genre, and this one fits into the sci-fi category. Players are tasked with surviving a deep-space mission after things have gone very wrong for the astronauts. Each moment is interactive and gripping.

The official Steam page for Directive 8020 gives some more insight into what to expect from the game. “Earth is dying, and humanity is running out of time. 12 light years from home, Tau Ceti f offers a small sliver of hope. When the colony ship Cassiopeia crash-lands on the planet, its crew soon realize they are far from being alone. In space, death takes many forms.” They also highlight “next-gen cinematics”, “real-time alien threats”, and to “trust no one”.

The final highlight is about the feature fans were shown in the most recent trailer presentation for Directive 8020 during the Future Games Showcase, Turning Point. Turning Point is a play on a do-over, where players can revisit pivotal moments of the storyline and change how they make decisions to see how each outcome plays out. The team describes this feature on their Steam page. “Rewrite your destiny and change the course of your story with our new Turning Points story tree. Uncover multiple endings, unlock hidden paths, and save your crew from their fateful deaths.”

A full trailer for the feature can be found below.

Final Thoughts

Directive 8020 has been hyped for a long time, and for good reason. Supermassive Games has nailed their series thus far, and it appears this entry will be no exception. Allowing players to redo their decisions through Turning Point, without having to beat the game to earn chapter access, and tying hidden secrets and multiple endings to the feature, makes the game both more accessible and quite interesting and engaging for all users. The full game will be released for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series on October 2, 2025.
