Thoughts on the Devil May Cry Netflix Series, Episode 7: At The Gates of Paradise

Devil May Cry Netflix series episode 7

Devil May Cry is barreling toward an epic finish. Things are getting close to wrapping up. White Rabbit’s army is prepped. Mary and Dante are charging into fights recklessly. Hidden truths are revealed. Quite an impressive penultimate episode. Unfortunately, there are still quite a few plot points that need to be wrapped up. It is highly unlikely that they will all be dealt with in the next episode, though. Good thing there’s going to be a second season.

Hello, Vergil

Spoiler alert and all but, at the same time, if you couldn’t figure out who that was just from the interaction between him and White Rabbit alone, I can’t help you. This scene didn’t hint at Vergil’s identity so much as scream it through a megaphone.

Still, begs several questions that, seeing as this is episode 7, we probably won’t get answers to until next season. Primarily, how did he survive the attack, and what has happened to him in the years since? Clearly, he’s managed to unlock his demonic powers, but at what cost? Ah, the joys of anticipation.

She’s Right, Though a Bit Cocky

Mary is absolutely right; Dante is the last person who should go and confront the White Rabbit. That said, barging in there by herself might not be the best plan either. I suppose one could argue that she was being self-sacrificing and didn’t want anyone else to die, which is somewhat noble.

That being said, if she failed, people would still die, and she wouldn’t be around to help them. So, in a way, she’s lucky that Dante came to help her out. Honestly, I like this show, but why is the entire plot based on everybody making really bad decisions?

Every Character in This Devil May Cry Adaptation is an Idiot

And, as if to add more fuel to the fire, here comes another bad decision. Does anyone, in this series, have the ability to think anything through? How, exactly, is bringing all the demons from Makai, including the upper-level demons who destroyed that realm, going to make anyone’s life better? Short answer, it’s not.

This plan is bad. Like really, really, REALLY bad. To the point where it’s almost disappointing. So far, White Rabbit has been a highly sophisticated and intelligent enemy, orchestrating elaborate and complex plans with precision. And now, we find out that it’s all to bring about a grand scheme that will have only negative results. What a letdown.

Mary is Starting to See Humanity’s Disgusting Underbelly

On the plus side, Mary is getting closer and closer to realizing the truth about DARKCOM and Baines in particular. It’s going to take some time, sure, but it will be well worth it. I’m very much looking forward to seeing how she will reconcile her past deeds with the true reality of the situation. It should make for some fascinating internal angst.
