Thoughts on the Devil May Cry Netflix Series, Episode 3: The Deep and Savage Way

Devil May Cry On Netflix

The domino effect is in full swing in this episode of Devil May Cry on Netflix. One bad call leads to another and another and another. First, you had Mary’s father, whose obsession with finding a way to deal with demons probably led to Mary’s current belligerence. This leads to her putting an explosive in Dante. Which then leads to his capture by the White Rabbit. Butterfly wing, meet hurricane.

Ah, there’s the rest of the villainous cast that we all knew was coming. In case you didn’t catch their names, the plant is Echidna, the flying guy is Cavaliere, the shapeshifter is Plasma, and the bash brothers are Agni (red) and Rudra (blue).

As a cast, they are good but also nothing special. Duo fighters, a vicious vixen, and a silent swordsman are all common enough tropes. Still, they are, nonetheless, effective. The only ones who seem to be able to hold their own against them are Dante and Mary. The plot armor will be strong with these two.

Despite their unexceptional archetypes, my main grip with the demonic quartet (Plasma doesn’t counter for this) is their animation style. I’ve never been fond of mixing styles without a good reason. I’m assuming that the logic was that they were demons, but they were the only demons who were animated in that particular style. Just didn’t work for me.

Devil May Cry Netflix Series Presents: An Army of Cannon Fodder

So, what exactly is the point of the Demon Hunters? Patriot was injured, Sentry just kind of stood there, and Ninja had to save King from getting blasted to Kingdom come. They are the named characters. All the other foot soldiers got wiped out without much issue. I get that the demons they are fighting are strong but, really, I did expect a little better.

Dante, the One-Man Army

Fighting off the demonic quartet was rather impressive, all things considered. I especially like the Car Fu with the motorcycle. His chit-chat with Cavaliere about the nature of demons was nice. I’ll admit I expected more of an existential crisis regarding his origins, but I guess that would require him to be more brain and less brawn.

I do have to wonder exactly how long the White Rabbit has been observing Dante, though. He was able to predict that Dante would protect the school bus full of people instead of going after him. Was he just making an educated guess, or has he been watching Dante for some time now? If the former, smart. If the latter, so many questions about timing.

Anders and Dr. Fisher, The Bad Decisions Bros

Ugh, where to begin with these two? I’ll start with Anders. I get that a parent’s love for their kids sometimes transcends reason, but, seriously, what do you think is going to happen when White Rabbit bridges the gap between worlds and unleashes the hordes of demons in Hell? At best, all you’re doing is delaying the inevitable. Maybe that’s worth it for you, but boy, howdy, is it shortsighted.

As for you, Dr. Fisher, I’m afraid I must share White Rabbit’s sentiments and express my disappointment in your intelligence. Didn’t you say, just last episode, that your mind is much too valuable for the front lines? And yet, somehow, you got it into your head that charging a homicidal maniac with a power sword that just finished mowing down at least a dozen trained soldiers was a good idea. Dumb. Just dumb.

And to compound your original stupidity, Dr. Fisher, you decide to not only throw a grenade at the rabbit but also announce it! You might, and I stress the word might, have been able to survive the sword through the gut if they had gotten you to the hospital in time. You ain’t surviving a grenade explosion, however. Congratulations on being the prime example of the difference between intelligence and wisdom.

Wait, Is That Foreshadowing I See?

So, the person/thing that Plasma transforms into has to be alive? I guess that means that Vergil is alive then, right? I mean, I think we all expected that because of the games but it begs the question, how does Plasma have access to him?

Also, this is very good to know because I thought Plasma had eaten the baby from episode 1.
