Thoughts on the Devil May Cry Netflix Series, Episode 2: Our Lady of Sorrows

Devil May Cry Netflix Dante

Things just got interesting. Comical battles with mercs, intense chase scenes, and previously unknown origins reveal, Devil May Cry Neflix series, episode 2 is jam-packed with great scenes. On top of that, the secondary plot was introduced, DARKCOM and their suspicious motives. If they’re mainly concerned about the security of the amulet, why not just go talk to Dante and try and work out a deal? Somethings up. Guess I’ll have to just keep watching to find out.

Dante Shows Off

Between Dante’s speed and regenerative abilities, those poor mooks never stood a chance. Honestly, I know that they were just there to act as decoys, but that was a little cruel. If Dante wasn’t such a nice guy, he easily could have killed them all.

That said, it’s nice to see a bit more of the showmanship that fans of the game have come to expect. The “Who are we shooting at?” line, in particular, was highly amusing. We’ll have to see if Dante is able to keep up his more amusing antics when he’s dealing with actual demonic threats rather than just a few hired guns. I, for one, hope he can.

Demon Hunters + Zealot = Headache

The Demon Hunters of DARKCOM are featured quite heavily in this episode, though only Mary does any real fighting. Besides her, we only know two of their names (Pat and King). Hopefully we will get to see them in action soon. That said, I wouldn’t get attached.  I’m getting strong death markers for all of them.

One of the reasons for this is their boss, Vice President of the USA William Baines (voiced by the late great Kevin Conroy). I don’t trust him. His zealotry is rather unnerving. That said, I’ll give him props for not even flinching when that demon tried to attack him.

In any event, Baines comes off as rather manipulative to me. He’s given strong Machiavellian vibes. I have no doubt that he’d be more than willing to sacrifice any one of the Demon Hunters, “For the cause”. In short, with him at the head, they’re all doomed.

Mary, Queen of the Devil May Cry Netflix Series

Strong, intelligent, and skilled. An excellent combination.  Unfortunately, her hatred for demons seems to be rather excessive. We’ve only seen “evil” demons so far but, with how aggressive she is in her disdain for them, it’s clear that things are going to end up being more complicated.

Unlike Baines, Mary’s intolerance towards demon-kind is not peppered with religious overtures. This, in combination with the episode’s title, leads me to the conclusion that she was somehow wronged by demons in the past. Perhaps this is something for her and Dante to connect over. Hollywood does love a good romance, even if fans might not.

Hidden Truths Now Revealed

OMG, Dante is a half-demon! I can’t believe it! Just kidding. Fans of the game, or anyone with a base knowledge of the game, are going to be shocked by this revelation. The fact that Dante was, however, is both mildly amusing and eye-rollingly exasperating. I mean, I know that technology is rather advanced in this universe, but the possibility never even crossed your mind? Really? No wonder Mary was able to outsmart you so easily.

Now that the truth has been revealed, I’m curious how Dante will react. While his outward expression of hatred towards demons is less pronounced than Mary or Baines, it’s clear he’s not a fan. I sense an existential crisis coming.
