Devil May Cry Netflix Director Discusses Show Adaptation from Capcom Series

Devil May Cry

Capcom has put out countless successful and popular game franchises over the years. Its extensive collection includes the thrilling hack-and-slash action series Devil May Cry. Like with any successful game brand, it encompasses other forms of media. A new Devil May Cry animated series will grace the streaming scene next month. The show’s director, Adi Shankar, was recently interviewed by IGN about working on it. Care to discover what the parties discussed and maybe uncover secrets about what’s to come?

Delving Into Devil May Cry

The first Devil May Cry game, debuting in 2001, introduced the fearless demon hunter, Dante. Players had to eradicate demonic foes as this gunslinging and sword-wielding protagonist. They also discover more about Dante’s past and lineage while facing an immensely dangerous devil. Devil May Cry achieved resounding success, prompting the creation of a series. Fans continued exploring more of the action-packed adventures of their favorite demon exterminator. And witness the story of Dante’s nephew and pseudo-successor in the later games, Nero.

The triumph of Devil May Cry led to an expanded franchise containing various media. Devoted Dante followers can experience new stories in comic books, manga, and light novels. They can also relive their favorite moments from the games with music soundtracks. Of course, the Devil May Cry brand has entries in visual media. There was an early 2000 Japanese anime set between the first two games. Now, a new animated series is premiering on Netflix next month.

IGN Interviews Devil May Cry Director

An interview at IGN Fan Fest 2025 addressed the upcoming animated series. Executive Producer Daemon Hatfield sat with the program’s creator, Adi Shankar. Shankar is well-known for his work on Dredd and the Netflix Castlevania cartoon. Interviewed alongside him was renowned celebrity Johnny Yong Bosch, the show’s leading voice actor. Bosch’s impressive includes playing Ichigo from Bleach and Adam from Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. He also voices Nero in the fourth and fifth Devil May Cry games.

The interview began with Hatfield asking Shankar what inspired him to make this series. Shankar explained that his motivation came from a discussion with a Capcom representative. He also revealed he wanted to elevate the franchise as Christopher Nolan did for Batman. Hatfield switched his attention to Bosch, asking about his take on Dante compared to Nero. Bosch responded by stating he sees Nero as a younger and angst-filled Dante. Given that response, his portrayal of Dante will likely be the opposite.

Hatfield soon asked if Shankar’s success with Castlevania permitted this new show. The series director said he starts making things, and then people appear. Shankar also revealed the entire franchise, and the third game inspired the show. Afterward, he vaguely confirmed that other famous Devil May Cry characters would appear. The interview resumed with talk about the show’s music and the playing of a clip. It finished up with Bosch reenacting a famous scene from the first video game.

Final Thoughts

I’m on board for this brand-new Devil May Cry animated series that’s arriving on Netflix. I’ve only played the fourth game, but I cannot deny that this show looks incredible. Plus, the fact Bosch is playing the titular character is drawing me in. I’ve been a fan of his since his days as the second black Power Ranger. Either way, I’ll have to check out this show once it debuts. Devil May Cry comes to the aforementioned streaming service early next month on April 3.
