Reality TV competition shows have become a staple in American pop culture, and a new series starting this week, Destination X, hopes to join that legacy. The new show will follow contestants as they travel around Europe in a whole new twist on geo-guessing. NBC and Peacock have been introducing us to several new reality shows in recent years, many of which have grown to a consistent level of popularity. Producers hope the show will be the next big thing, and it certainly has the foundation to be an intriguing, exciting, and unique entry into the reality space.
Destination X Premise and What To Look For
Destination X is the newest entry in the reality television space. Airing on CBS, it will follow twelve contestants around locations throughout Europe. While the initial description sounds a bit like Amazing Race, the actual set-up is anything but. Players will compete in competitions to earn clues about where in the world they are, a question that is at the heart of the show’s premise. According to NBC:
“In each episode, the players disembark the bus to visit unique and unfamiliar tourist attractions that have been gamified into experiential challenges. They will need to rely on their knowledge of pop culture, history, geography and observational skills to win clues to their current location and earn an all-important advantage. Contestants must tap into their own personal expertise, identify hidden clues that are disguised as artifacts and discern intentional misdirects from competitors to ultimately determine their whereabouts. “
Hosted by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the show will transform Europe into a larger-than-life game board, one that Morgan plans to play twisted game master for. There will be shake-ups and twists, mind games and enthralling competitions, alliances and backstabbing, all to shake players off the travel trail. Each week, after earning clues, competition advantages, and their gut reactions, players must enter a map room and mark where they believe they are currently located. The player who is furthest away from the actual location will be eliminated. Thus, players need to have keen eyes, ears, and a strategy to get to the end.
