Dept Q Deserves a Guaranteed Season 2? Creator Clarifies His Stance For The Future

Dept Q is currently number 3 in Netflix’s top 10 shows globally. Fans have binged all 9 episodes, and they’re asking for more. But there are two big questions. Does the creator want to do more? And will Netflix renew the show?

What is Dept Q?

Dept Q is a crime thriller that was released on Netflix on May 29, 2025. It’s based on a series of 10 books called Department Q, written by Jussi Adler-Olsen. The Netflix description says, “A brash but brilliant cop becomes head of a new police department, where he leads an unlikely team of misfits in solving Edinburgh’s cold cases.”

The show follows DCI Carl Morck (Matthew Goode) as he leads the new department. His new team includes Akram Salim (Alexej Manvelov) and Rose Dickson (Leah Byrne). They’re faced with solving a cold case involving the disappearance of Merritt Lingard (Chloe Pirrie) four years ago. And she might still be alive.

Will There Be a Season 2?

Netflix hasn’t renewed Dept Q yet. But creator Scott Frank does want to continue the story. He said, “I do know what I want to do next. I do have the story in mind for the next season.” He did say that he might do six episodes instead of 9 for the next season, though. Actor Matthew Goode also said, “It’s going to be really exciting if we do get to come back.”

With 10 books in the series, that could lead to another 9 seasons! That’s a lot of original material to work with. Regarding the second book, Frank said, “It is another cold case and also a current case, at the same time, that they’re looking into. So, I would do that.”

Season One is based on the first book, Mercy, so it would make sense if Season Two followed the second book, The Absent One. The cold case in the second book is the 20-year-old murder of a brother and sister. While one suspect is already incarcerated, Carl thinks there’s more than meets the eye and seeks to answer unsolved questions.

Who Will Return?

Dept Q wouldn’t be the same if Matthew Goode didn’t return to fill the shoes of Carl Morck. So, it’s good news that he’s excited about the possibility. It would be great to see Alexej Manvelov and Leah Byrne return as well. Kelly McDonald, Kate Dickie, Aaron McVeigh, and Jamie Sives would be missed too. And, there’s a chance for Chloe Pirrie to make an appearance as well.

Since there’s no official word from Netflix yet, we’re only making guesses here. The speculation on the internet is that the series was so well-received that a second season is a no-brainer. Keep an eye on this page because we’ll update you when we hear news!
