Joe Budden Sparks Debate About Doja Cat and Latto

Female rappers have been dominating the genre for quite some time now. While women have always been in Hip Hop/Rap, there has never been as much diversity in female rap as there is right now. There will always be moments of comparison between female rappers, though, and currently there is a major debate about the two rappers Doja Cat and Latto regarding which is better.

Doja Cat

Doja Cat is a rapper who garnered attention on TikTok during the 2018/2019 era. Even though it took that long for her to gain mainstream popularity, she had already released two full-length albums by then and had been in the music industry for nearly ten years. Her hit track “Say So” on her sophomore album Hot Pink took TikTok by storm and is still one of her biggest hits.

The release of her third album, Planet Her, cemented her stardom by proving to her fans that she is a hitmaker. Fans also note how her performances sound similar to her studio recordings, meaning she uses very little Auto-Tune and touch-up. Doja is also known to be a quality performer, someone that fans never have a bad experience watching or feel as though they wasted their money to see and hear.

There are many debates about Doja Cat, however, when it comes to her status as a rapper. Even though she raps in all of her songs, she sings in them as well. This isn’t new for rappers, but it’s often a point of discussion when it comes to Doja. In addition, she rarely raps over traditional hip-hop beats, instead preferring pop or R&B. This sparks debates on whether or not Doja is a rapper or a singer who raps. These conversations make it difficult for some hip-hop fans to take Doja seriously when including her in discussions of lyricism and rap debates.

Latto

Latto first rose to fame on the Lifetime reality show The Rap Game. While she had been releasing songs and music videos on platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud for years prior, she hadn’t been mainstream and had a small audience. When she was 16, she participated in The Rap Game, a show that music legend Jermaine Dupri hosted. The premise of the show was that Dupri was looking for the next big rapper among the youth, which is why all of the contestants were under the age of 18.

The contestants competed in various challenges including freestyle rap, making a music video, creating their own song in a professional studio, and performing in front of small crowds. All of this was to win a contract to Dupri’s record label So So Def. Latto competed in the first season and won the contract, which she later revealed she did not sign.

Since then, she’s been slowly rising and eventually got her big break with her hit “B*tch from Da Souf.” Latto has become a fully recognized mainstream rapper, though not without her controversies. Many question her lyrical ability due to most of her lyrics being sexually explicit. A lot of people also feel that her music lacks creativity and quality. Her inconsistency in releasing music is also a point of contention.

The Joe Budden Debate

On his podcast, former rapper Joe Budden sparked a debate between Doja Cat and Latto that has fans talking on X. This came after Budden said that he feels Latto is the better rapper. Due to his comments, fans are now locked into a discussion about which rapper is better. Many cite Doja’s creative talents, the way she puts on a concert, her lyricism, her creativity, and her voice control in her favor. Doja can also sing and does it well. This is especially pertinent because not every rapper can sing, similar to how not every singer can rap.

In Latto’s favor, fans cite her drive and ambition, which many saw firsthand on The Rap Game. There is also discussion about how Latto’s technical rapping skill is better than Doja’s, and she can freestyle while we’ve never heard that from Doja before. Many believe that freestyling is an important part of being a rapper, as it has historical roots in hip-hop.

Final Thoughts

Doja Cat and Latto are both great artists who make good music. They each have their strengths and weaknesses; who the better artist is depends on what kind of music a person enjoys. Which of them is the better rapper depends on how you view rap and what you think constitutes rap/hip-hop.

Doja raps over pop/R&B tracks, whereas Latto will often rap over more classic hip-hop beats. Doja sings in many of her songs, while Latto will either have a feature or simply no singing part for her music. Generally speaking, most consider Doja to be the more talented lyricist, which then brings the conversation back around because lyricism in rap is important. Ultimately, both women are incredibly talented and consistently put on great performances, win awards, and release incredible bodies of work. The debate is fun to have, nonetheless.
