‘Death of A Unicorn’ is an upcoming film by A24 that will involve not only two famous actors but also multiple themes. It will be Sci-Fi, gore, death, horror, comedy, and parts revolving around the supernatural. Jenna Ortega and Paul will play the two main characters in ‘Death of A Unicorn‘, with advertisements and trailers already released on multiple platforms.
Death of A Unicorn’s Trailer Analysis
The release of the trailers and advertisements for ‘Death of A Unicorn‘ were all very recent, with the estimate being just two days ago. Both A24 and IMDb have the same official trailer out on their YouTube channels, and both were posted around the same time two days ago. The descriptions for both videos unfortunately have no summary of what to expect from the film, but the trailer thankfully gives enough suspense and context.
The official trailer begins with Jenna Ortega playing one of the main characters, Riley, as she appears to be looking into the eye of a creature. Many audiences may guess that the mystery creature not fully shown is a unicorn, who is trying to show or tell her something. The scene then pans to showing her and Paul Rudd who is playing the father of Riley, Elliott, as they drive through the woods. It is daylight and he is explaining to his daughter what she needs to know about the location and people they are visiting. It is during this event that they are assumed to have accidentally caused the death of a unicorn.
The remainder of the trailer goes by in a blur after that, still not revealing the full body image of the unicorn that was struck but hinting that there is more than one. Some unicorn parts can be seen, one where dust from the horn is being shaved off and studied, another where a dark hoof is stepping down menacingly. The rich family that the father and daughter are visiting reveals they may plan to use more of the unicorn to sell for money and scientific research, and Riley soon discovers the consequences of this.
Jenna Ortega
The famous Latina actress who has won eleven awards and was nominated for twenty-nine others, Jenna Ortega is perfect for the role of Riley. She has years’ worth of experience in acting, with her career having begun at Disney, as the main character for a show called ‘Stuck in the Middle‘. Her acting career would soon evolve after leaving Disney to pursue other films, with examples being Wednesday, the 2022 and 2023 Scream films, Beetlejuice, and many other films as the lead.
Another reason she’s perfect for the lead role in ‘Death of A Unicorn‘, is because she has played in multiple different films that had the same genres of this film. Ortega has experience playing the role of a daughter in a comedy thanks to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Stuck in the Middle. She also has experience working with themes of horror, drama, and the supernatural thanks to the Scream franchise, the previously listed above films, and The Babysitter: Killer Queen.
Paul Rudd
Known for playing characters that would range between serious and comedic, Paul Rudd is perfect for the cast of Elliot. Currently, many fans would associate him with his role as Scott Lang, or the superhero Ant-Man, but he starred in many other popular films before that. Not only does he have a long amount of experience after having starred in many movies, but he also studied acting and theater before he even began his career. Rudd graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, before then attending a workshop at the British Drama Academy at Oxford University. This was of course in Britain.
The reason he is the perfect fit to play a father in ‘Death of A Unicorn‘ is due to his experience in many other comedy movies and TV series. This can be proven by the number of times he’d been nominated for his performances in a series or movie of this genre. Rudd also has experience in playing roles in horror or supernatural films, with an example being Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Last but not least, Paul Rudd is more than familiar with acting in Sci-Fi films, what with having appeared in many Marvel movies that tend to always have a Sci-Fi element to them.
First Reactions
Coming from the perspective of someone who was a fan of both Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd, the sudden news of their new casting as a father-daughter duo was a delight. Normally, the projects they were cast in separately were always entertaining and had good plots. Now with the reactions coming from someone unimpressed with recent movie and series creations lately, the ‘Death of A Unicorn‘ trailer piqued my curiosity.
When watching the ‘Death of A Unicorn‘ trailer for the first time, my first feelings were curiosity, then surprise, and soon emotional investment and dread. The writers and actors did a great job of making me feel at ease and soon surprised me after showing the horn protruding through the roof of the car. It also became more surprising when there were scenes of just the shadow of the unicorn being depicted as something from a horror novel. Because of the trailer, I’m more excited to see the full results of how ‘Death of A Unicorn‘ will bring these mythical creatures to life and turn them into horrific creatures through puppetry and CGI.
‘Death of A Unicorn’ will also star other famous actors such as Nick Wittman, Narantsogt Tsogtsaikhan, Christine Grace Szarko, and more. For the creation of the unicorn characters, there was an art department, a special effects team, and a visual effects team. This means that the unicorns will be brought to life with a blend of puppetry and VFX. This information was very pleasing as puppetry isn’t all that common in most films nowadays, and it eases my mind to know they won’t be using AI.
Death of A Unicorn Looks Promising
‘Death of A Unicorn‘ is a film that tells the story of what happens when the existence of unicorns becomes known to the wrong people. ‘Death of A Unicorn‘ will show a detailed and realistic scenario of how the people may react. The scientists fighting their common sense of their existence, from contributing their genius to profiting from it. The characters that Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd will be playing will hopefully be the types of people who would stop this happening or at least escalate further.
