James Gunn Recruit Monstrous Heroes For Creature Commandos

James Gunn Creature Commandos

On July 26th, James Gunn revealed his plans for the new DC Universe 2024 Comic-Con. No one expected their strange heroes from Creature Commandos to appear. The animated trailer gave DC fans a taste of the ferocious humans who sacrificed themselves for science. If anyone were to create something from DC’s past, it would be James Gunn himself. Here’s what Creature Commandos have set up for its animated universe.

Classic Monsters As Bioweapons

Before the show’s announcement at Comic-Con 2024, Creature Commandos began as a mini-comic series called Weird Tales in 1980. The story featured Lucky Taylor (Frankenstein Monster), Vincent Velcro (Vampire), and Warren Griffith (Werewolf). These monsters became bioweapons to fight Nazis during World War II. They are designed to strike fear into the hearts of men.

In the trailer for James Gunn’s animated revival, a monster called G.I. Robot mentions about his time in World War II taking down Nazis. In Weird Tales, he had an acronym for his name JAKE which stands for Jungle Automatic Killer Experimental. According to James Gunn, he will be combining Weird Tales’ Creature Commandos with DC’s Earth 52 team, SHADE (Super Human Advance Defense Executive). The next-generation Frankenstein, Eric fights alongside Dr. Nina Mazursky (Amphibious Mermaid), Khalis (Mummy), and Lady Frankenstein.

Two DC Characters Join The Monsters

Dr, Phosphorous

James Gunn added two DC characters for Creature Commandos’ animated revival. One of them is Dr. Phosphorous, an underrated Batman villain from 1977. He was once a prized scientist named James Alexander Sartorius of the Tobacconists’ Club. When Gotham’s residents refused him to build a power plant, Sartorius moved it by the sea. Soon, he interacted with hot phosphorous sand near a cracked reactor, becoming phosphorous flames and bones.

His first crime involved poisoning a concert audience and poisoning Gotham’s water supply. Thanks to his phosphorous flames, anyone who touches him will receive severe burns. This forced Batman to create an anti-radiation suit. He defeated Sartorius by tossing him into his power plant reactor. He survived and was admitted in Arkham Asylum.

The Weasel

Instead of Warren Griffith the Werewolf soldier, James Gunn swapped him for Weasel, the loose furry cannon. The Weasel is known as the estranged creature in DC’s Suicide Squad films. He first appeared in 1985 in The Fury of Firestorm Issue #38. He was once Professor John Monroe who murdered his colleagues at Vandermeer U. His motive was that no one remembers him which led him on a rampage.

Monroe’s mind slowly grew unstable and he ended up in solitary confinement. He was a short-time member of the Suicide Squad after smelling blood. The scent drove him on a rampage to destroy whatever human was in his path, jeopardizing the mission. The Weasel is also a former Black Lantern. Despite his best efforts, he remains forgettable.

The Return Of Rick Flag

Creature Commandos introduced DC fans to the return of Rick Flag, but not in the way people expected. In James Gunn’s Suicide Squad and John Cena’s Peacemaker Season 1, Rick Flag was killed. In the series’ trailer, Amanda Waller referred to the saluting man as General Flag. This is his father, Rick Flag Sr. He will be following his son’s footsteps managing a team of dangerous individuals.

General Flag will be assigned to Task Force M. The monsters are Eric Frankenstein, Lady Frankenstein, Nina Mazursky, JAKE (G.I. Robot), Weasel, and Dr. Phosphorous. There are no humans because it would attract war activists to riot against Congress. General Flag also has experience with training Rick and the Suicide Squad to deal with psychotic tendencies. His actor, Frank Grillo is excited to play him for the animated series this December.
