David Tennant, the Scottish star of Doctor Who and Jessica Jones, revealed at the MCM Comic-Con in London that if he got the opportunity to play any superhero, he’d choose the stretchy leader of the Fantastic 4, Reed Richards. Richers, also known as Mr. Fantastic, has the power to stretch his body like elastic, and he is a responsible family man. Indeed, Tennant in the role could work.
David Tennant as Reed Richards.
At the MCM Comic-Con, a fan asked Tennant which superhero he would most like to play. Here’s how he responded:
In terms of superheroes I did slightly have my eye on Reed Richards and unfortunately it looks like they’ve gone in a different direction. Although if it has to be someone I’m very happy for it to be Pedro Pascal.
Does this mean he auditioned for the role of Reed Richards in the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps? Not necessarily, but the fact that he specifically references First Steps star Pedro Pascal indicates that he was at least thinking about it.
Reed Richards Casting
The Mandalorian star Pascal isn’t the first actor to play Reed Richards in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, an alternate universe version of the character was played by John Krasinski. This was meant as an in-joke because, according to director Sam Rami, “fans had a dream of who the perfect Reed Richards would be.” Now that David Tennant has expressed interest in playing Richards, perhaps there could be another in-joke somewhere down the line in the MCU.
Why did Pedro Pascal replace John Krasinski?
For one thing, Krasinski’s Mr. Fantastic (SPOILER) died in Multiverse of Madness, and for another thing, Pascal’s Mr. Fantastic is from an entirely different universe. However, even with Pascal’s casting, there might still be hope for David Tennant to play Mr. Fantastic someday. Since the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been experimenting with the multiverse and alternate versions of characters, perhaps someday Pascal’s Mr. Fantastic could meet an alternate universe version of himself played by Tennant. It would definitely be a fun Easter egg for fans.
