Gears of War has had a long saga of getting made into a movie, and it now seems that David Leitch is all set to lead it as the Director. The popular game of the same name attracts tons of players and has different iterations. The movie has had its own challenges getting off the ground. Now it looks as though it’s taken a few steps forward. Let’s check out the journey to get this game produced into a motion picture.
What is Gears of War About?
Gears of War was developed in 2006 by Epic Games and then published by Microsoft Game Studios. It was considered one of the greatest video games ever made, selling over three million copies shortly after its release. It’s been remastered in 2016 and again in 2017. Single or multiple players can participate and communicate via the gaming console. The object in the game is to fight underground dwellers, called Locusts, so the last of the humans on planet Sera can be saved.
The Gears of War Franchise
Because of the success of Gears of War, there are many adaptations. Comic books, merchandise, an animated film on Netflix, and now a live-action film are to be released, hopefully within the next few years. Music for the video games has been composed by Steve Jablonsky and Ramin Djawadi.
Gears of War Upcoming Movie
In 2022, Netflix announced two upcoming Gears films – one animated and one live-action. The live-action one has had quite a history. Starting in 2007, it caught the eye of Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard), who wanted to direct. Since then, it’s gone through several planning changes. In 2016, there was renewed interest in bringing Gears of War to Netflix. Eventually, Jon Spaihts was brought in to pen the script, and now they have tapped David Leitch to be at the director’s helm.
Who is David Leitch?
David Leitch is well-known in the film industry, particularly for being a stuntman. He’s been the stunt double for Keanu Reeves in John Wick, and he has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. He has also produced and directed multiple films to include Bullet Train, Deadpool 2, and Atomic Blonde.
Just recently, David was named as director. He will lend an experienced eye to Gears in terms of making action scenes realistic. His in-depth knowledge of stunts and stunt coordination is invaluable. Plus, Leitch has expressed the desire to run it through his production company, 87North, which he owns with his wife, producer Kelly McCormick.
To Wrap Up
David is a brilliant choice to direct Gears of War. Bringing a video game to the screen can involve some tricky planning, and Leitch is the best one to work through this. A little bit of interesting trivia is that Dave Bautista (Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise) has expressed interest in playing the protagonist Marcus Fenix. We hope to see the Gears movie in production very soon, and would love to see it completed by 2026 or thereabouts.
