Last week, Daughtry’s new single “Pieces” rose to the top of Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay Chart, the second time the band has reached the number one spot on this particular chart this year. “Pieces” is setting the stage for the band’s upcoming album, Shock to the System (Part One), to be a commercial success once it’s released on September 27.
Rolling Up the Charts
According to an article in Forbes, Daughtry never reached the top of the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart until they started promoting their new album. This chart is focused on radio station airplay of mainstream rock, which author Hugh McIntyre described as on the “heavier side.” The album’s first single, “Artificial,” reached number one in February, a first for the band. Last week, Daughtry’s “Pieces” was seated in the number 2 spot for Mainstream Rock Airplay. The song also moved from number 13 to 12 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay ranking.
Their First Number One In 17 Years
According to an article by Billboard, Daughtry’s first entry into the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart was short-lived. After 17 years of appearances on the hard-rocking chart, “Artificial” would finally give the band the top honors in the category; sadly, the song only held the number one position for one week. The band’s first song to enter Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart was 2007’s “It’s Not Over.” The song peaked at number five in that category and was considered a solid first single from Daughtry’s debut studio album.
Supporting Video
On April 4, Daughtry released a music video for “Pieces” on YouTube. One commenter described the video as a “dream come true,” highlighting their favorite parts of the video as “Daughtry, fast cars, and wolves.” That pretty much nails it. The video begins on a stormy night with lead vocalist Chris Daughtry carving through a country road at high speeds. Although he is driving fast, he is focused on the road.
Suddenly, he catches his reflection, and the rearview mirror shatters, causing him to drive off the road. Emerging from the wreckage, Chris learns he is not alone in the woods. He is being followed by a mysterious man wearing a hooded cloak and by a wolf. An epic battle ensues as our hero learns “to live with the broken pieces of me.”
Final Thoughts
As Daughtry prepares to release Shock to the System (Part One), they have supported the album’s release with two well-produced singles. Daughtry’s vocals are filled with passion and energy, and the band complements them well in both singles. It will be interesting to hear if the other songs on the EP are as bold.
Daughtry’s touring schedule is filled with shows throughout the rest of the year. The band will play shows with Creed, Finger Eleven, Breaking Benjamin, and Stand at various shows through the end of October. The band will resume touring at the end of November for its Adrenaline Gone Ballistic Holiday Tour with Sleep Theory and Devour the Day.
