Darth Maul has been a fan favorite Star Wars character ever since he first brandished his double-bladed lightsaber in The Phantom Menace. He was so popular that even though he seemed to die in The Phantom Menace, Lucasfilm brought him back for the animated shows, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Now, the devil-faced Sith Lord will be getting his own series.
Maul: Shadow Lord
The series, titled Maul: Shadow Lord, will reportedly take place after the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Fans were given a sneak peek at the series at this week’s Star Wars Celebration. While Disney has yet to officially release the trailer on YouTube, some users have leaked amateur footage of the trailer and shared it online. The trailer seems to show Maul training a red-skinned Twi’lek apprentice, and the show will apparently utilize some unused ideas from George Lucas himself.
Maul: Crime Lord?
The end of 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story featured a surprise cameo by Darth Maul, showing him as the true head of the crime syndicate, Crimson Dawn. Since the series will take place before Solo, perhaps it will chronicle Maul’s rise in the underworld. In addition, one has to wonder if the series will showcase other popular characters such as Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. Perhaps Maul is planning to use his apprentice to seize power from Palpatine and Vader.
An Exciting Future for Star Wars?
Two new Star Wars movies, The Mandalorian and Grogu, and Star Wars: Starfighter, are set for theatrical releases in 2026 and 2027, respectively. Disney seems to be trying to push Star Wars into a new era that rekindles fans’ excitement about the franchise. Indeed, giving a popular character like Darth Maul his own series is bound to generate plenty of hype. If it has the same amount of love put into it that Star Wars: The Clone Wars had, Darth Maul: Shadow Lord could be something truly special.
The show will also feature Sam Witwer, who voiced Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Solo: A Star Wars Story, reprising the role of Maul. Maul: Shadow Lord is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2026.
