On Tuesday, Oct. 1, Focus Features and Plan B announced they would partner to produce Anemone. Daniel Day-Lewis is set to be the star, ending his seven-year-long retirement from acting. Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski disclosed their partnership with the father-son duo. Kujawski shared that the company was enthusiastic to work with a “brilliant visual artist,” referring to Ronan on his first feature film. They were also excited about the creative collaboration Daniel provided. Kujawski added that the two Day-Lewis’ script is “truly exceptional.”

Daniel Day-Lewis is a talented method actor regarded as one of the best of his time. He won three Oscar Awards for Best Actor for his roles in My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln. He was also nominated thrice for Gangs of New York, In the Name of the Father, and Phantom Thread. Meanwhile, Ronan is a filmmaker and artist. His first solo exhibition will be in Hong Kong on Oct. 2, 2024.

When Did Daniel Retire?

Daniel Day-Lewis announced his retirement in 2017, some months before filming ended for his last project. The actor was working on Phil Thompson’s Phantom Thread at the time. He told WSJ at the time, “All my life, I’ve mouthed off about how I should stop acting, and I don’t know why it was different this time, but the impulse to quit took root in me, and that became a compulsion. It was something I had to do.”

Five months before his interview with WSJ, Daniel’s representative had announced the actor’s retirement. The statement noted that the decision to walk away was private. Daniel was grateful to everyone but would not comment on his retirement. However, during his interview in November 2017, the actor revealed that Phantom Thread influenced his decision. The British star declared that he didn’t want to see the project once it was out. He also publicly announced his retirement to make the decision binding.

The Film Is About Familial Relationships

Daniel Day-Lewis has long been fascinated by relationships between fathers and sons. Two of his Oscar-winning films, Lincoln and There Will Be Blood, explore this theme. Anemone, which is already being produced, also explores this relationship dynamic. Focus Features explained that the feature film investigates the bond between fathers, sons, and brothers and explores the “dynamics of familial bonds.”

Conclusion

Daniel Day-Lewis and his son Ronan’s relationship is admirable and indicates a strong bond. It is also a testament that they are qualified to make a film on father-son relationships. Already, there is a lot of anticipation about Daniel’s return to acting. He was also recently spotted with fellow actor Bean in Manchester, England. Hopefully, Anemone will be well-received by the audience, and Daniel and Ronan will work together on more projects.
