Daily Devotional Thoughtful Thursday | May 21, 2026
It’s Thursday, and time for your daily devotional. Mindfulness, or living in the present, is important to your health and well-being. However, you should be aware of what God reveals about the future and live intentionally. In today’s daily devotional, don’t waste time rehearsing the past; think of the joy God has ahead of you.
The Great Separation
As Jesus told the parable of the net, He compared the way fishermen separate their catch. The good fish are put into vessels, but the bad are tossed away. God will separate the righteous from the wicked on the day of judgment. Imagine you’ll be separated from wicked people who’ll no longer be able to speak against your faith or plot evil against you. In your daily devotional, when evildoers are removed, negativity ceases, and glory unfolds.
Weighed in the Balances
In verse 49, Jesus says, “So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just.” On the day of reckoning, all that you’ve done will be weighed in the balances and judged. Yes, you’re saved by grace through faith, but faith without works is dead. Although your works don’t save you, they show where your faith lies.
God will appoint angels to “sever the wicked from among the just.” The word “sever” denotes harshness or force. Some separations won’t be easy, such as family members or close relationships. The thought of being eternally separated from a spouse, a child, or a parent is unsettling. In today’s daily devotional, keep sharing the gospel, praying for others, and being an example. They’re catalysts that determine where people end up.
Wailing and Gnashing

Jesus warns them in verse 50 what happens to evildoers in the end: “And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” Hell is the future for the unrighteous. Jesus describes hell as a place of torment, for there will be “wailing and gnashing of teeth.” Misery, pain, and punishment are the undesirable consequences of an unbeliever’s future.
Many don’t believe hell exists; however, Jesus taught that it does. Some believe that a loving God can’t send anyone to hell. However, God doesn’t send anyone to hell; individuals’ choices determine where they’ll spend eternity. In this daily devotional, know that hell was prepared for the devil and his angels, but Psalm 9:17 says that the wicked will be turned into hell.
No More Grace
In Luke 16:19-31, Jesus tells the story of a rich man who dies and goes to hell, while Lazarus, a man who begged at this gate, dies and goes to Abraham’s bosom. While the rich man is in torments, he sees Lazarus being comforted. He makes three requests: that Lazarus bring water to cool his tongue, that Lazarus be sent to warn his brothers, and that Lazarus’ appearance inspires their salvation. The rich man’s requests are all denied. In this daily devotional, in hell, there is no more grace for the wicked.
The Joy That Awaits You
In Thursday’s daily devotional, heed Jesus’ warnings and do whatever you can to bring souls to Christ. Try to avoid anyone being eternally separated from Him. Jesus uses real names only in the parable of the rich man, indicating its authenticity. Jesus spent a lot of time teaching about hell, which indicates it does exist, and there is real danger in going there. In today’s daily devotional, live intentionally for Christ and think of the joy that awaits you.
