Exploding from New York City’s Radio Music Hall, the 78th Annual Tony Awards were full of glitz, glamour, and breathtaking performances. Hosted by the multi-talented singer/actress Cynthia Erivo, this year’s ceremony was full of songs that we will always sing.

What is a song? According to the dictionary, a song is simply a melodic musical composition performed by the human voice.  Realistically, a song’s true definition cannot be described in words.  It can only be felt.  As a result, many of us like certain songs for a multitude of reasons. When feeling jubilant, we use songs as a form of enhancing our moods, as well as using them as coping mechanisms when we are feeling sad.

Cynthia Erivo knows these feelings all too well. On the heels of her stunning portrayal in Wicked (2024), the award-winning Nigerian singer/actress returned to the Tony’s stage to deliver another memorable performance.  Belting out her original tune, “Sometimes All You Need Is A Song”,  Erivo kept the audience in awe, as she sauntered across the stage perfectly executing every note.  Clad in a long, red, sparkling gown adorned with a white collar and belt, Erivo was eventually joined by the Broadway Inspirational Voices.  Clad in white ensembles, the Tony Award-winning choir further enhanced Ervio’s performance with their illustrious vocals.  Soon after, Erivo engaged in playful banter with certain audience members, having each of them sing with her.

These audience members included Aaron Tveit, Kristin Chenoweth, and Adam Lambert, whose glitter-filled voices drew positive responses from others in the crowd.  Erivo also included certain nominees in the song, including George Clooney, who was seen smiling from his seat.  Once the performance concluded, the crowd rose to their feet in a well-deserved standing ovation, solidifying Erivo’s true star power.  Another huge achievement of the night went to the Korean musical, Maybe Happy Ending, which tied for a leading ten nominations, winning six, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book.
