Curse of the Wererabbit is a Parody of Dracula and Frankenstein

A Matter of Loaf and Death Curse of the WereRabbit

The duo of Wallace and Gromit have experienced many crazy events throughout their lives. They have stopped a criminal penguin and stumbled upon a sheep rustling ring. However, their first feature film, Curse of the Wererabbit, upped the stakes like never before. Wallace and Gromit must stop a rampaging monster from destroying the town’s vegetables. And the danger might be closer to home than they thought.

A Look at Wallace and Gromit

Created by Nick Park, Wallace and Gromit debuted in A Grand Day Out. The short film showcased the titular characters building a rocket and flying to the moon. It became an immediate hit and began a brand-new media series. Park began working on a new film, including creating the character’s personalities and roles. Wallace became a good-natured yet eccentric inventor with a passion for cheese. And Gromit was reworked into a homemaking straight man ready to protect his owner.

Their adventures mostly feature the duo managing their home-grown businesses. This detail came into play after the second-ever short, The Wrong Trousers. Wallace and Gromit have held professions such as window washers and bakers. They often employ Wallace’s ingenious inventions during their ventures, making the work easy and fun. However, the duo always cross paths with foes with cruel or greedy motives. And this trend continued in Wallace and Gromit’s first feature film, Curse of the Wererabbit.

The Curse of the Wererabbit Story

In 2005’s Curse of the Wererabbit, Wallace and Gromit is a humane pest control service. Their specialty is rabbits, and it’s a much-needed business at the current moment. The town is holding its annual Giant Vegetable Competition, and many townsfolk are entering. Wallace and Gromit’s job is to keep the vegetables safe from any ravenous rabbit. However, their humane methods have led to them taking in every lagomorph they capture. Their basement is filled to the brim with bunnies until the end of the competition.

Wallace and Gromit soon land a job at Tottington Hall from the bunny-loving Lady Tottington. Afterward, Wallace uses his latest invention to brainwash rabbits into hating vegetables. An accident occurs with one of the rabbits, but the experiment works. However, things take a turn when a monster dubbed the wererabbit suddenly appears. It goes on a late-night rampage, devouring practically every vegetable in sight. Can Wallace and Gromit capture the beast before it can ruin the competition?

A Homage to Classic Monster Movies

Curse of the Wererabbit is a parody of famous horror films and monsters. The film’s British town has a 50s aesthetic, referencing movies like Dracula and Frankenstein. The same goes for how the townspeople parody the classic torch and pitchfork-wielding villagers. And like Dracula, the wererabbit is a creature of the night swooping upon its victims. The local vicar even tried protecting himself with a makeshift cross made of veggies. Curse of the Wererabbit further highlights Frankenstein by featuring a scientist and his creature.

However, the movie is a massive parody of The Wolf Man. The wererabbit is a man who transforms by the light of a full moon. It even howls like a wolf, causing other rabbits to follow its actions. Curse of the Wererabbit also parodies non-horror movies like King Kong during the climactic battle. There are even aspects of Beauty and the Beast around the same time. And the wererabbit is also similar to the Incredible Hulk, being inspired by Frankenstein’s monster.

Final Thoughts

Curse of the Wererabbit is a fun horror spoof all viewers can enjoy. It brings classic monster frights to the modern age but is enjoyable for kids. The movie also contains the renowned Wallace and Gromit humor and thrills. And despite the low-tier scares, Curse of the Wererabbit is ideal for Halloween. Nothing fits the spooky season more than a hairy monster terrorizing the townsfolk. Or, in this case, devouring their beloved vegetables for an annual contest.
