Welcome to Creative Gardening by the Moon. This is a weekly column to help you know when best to plant, transplant, harvest, cultivate, and rid your gardens of pests and weeds based on the path of our moon along with the movement of the planets through the astrological signs as they move through our atmosphere.
Sunday the moon is moving through Cancer with Leo following on Monday. Virgo follows on Thursday leaving Saturday to make room for Libra who will grace us with his presence through Monday. On May 5th, we entered Apogee and will stay there through May 17th when we will move back into Perigee. The moon went into ascension on May 5th and will continue its ascent until May 19th. The moon moves into its first quarter on Wednesday.
Sunday, May 12th | Cancer

On Sunday the 12th, we are rounding out the last of our Leaf Days which started only yesterday. Leaf days are days to work with plants that grow above the ground, leafy plants including lettuces, cabbages, aromatic herbs, and shrubs. These are plants that not only take in water and nutrients through their roots but also their leafy tops. This is also a good time for transplanting and grafting.
- As the moon is ascending and the earth is taking a deep breath out, it’s time to use liquid treatments on the tops of the plants for nutrients or to rid your plants of pests
- The moon is currently in apogee and the farthest from the planet, again making it the best time to sow seeds, bulbs and starts though not perfectly ideal as we are not on a Root Day.
Monday, May 13th – Thursday, May 16th | Leo

On Monday, Leo will follow Cancer bringing us into approximately 3 1/2 days of Fruit Days. As Leo is a Fire Sign, these are days to work with plants that produce fruits. Fruit trees and shrubs, corn, peas, beans, things that need that sun to grow high above the ground. As it’s considered a low water time, this is also a time for ridding your plants of pests and weeds as well as cultivating all plants.
If you are good and don’t have anything listed about to do, other than watering, it’s a great time to take a break. Get yourself a cup of coffee or tea, find a comfy place to sit among your plants, and read a book. That’s what I would be doing.

- The moon is currently in apogee and the farthest from the planet, again making it a good time to sow seeds, bulbs, and starts though not the most ideal as it’s not a root or leaf day. It could be a good day to catch up if you have plants that need to be put in before it’s too late.

On Thursday the 18th Virgo will be pushing Leo out taking over for the next 2 days bringing us back into Root Days. These are days to work with plants that produce their goodies, their fruit, under the ground like potatoes, beets, or carrots. This is also a time to work with the earth. Weeding, cultivating, adding fertilizers, and transplanting.

Saturday, May 18th – Monday, May 20th | Libra
And here we are at the end of another week. We have moved on from Virgo and Libra will be with us through Monday. This week we have come full circle starting in Flower Days and ending in Flower Days. Time to work with flowering plants like broccoli, cauliflower, artichokes, and flowering plants and shrubs, edible or not. This is the time to feed the bees, work with the plants that they love so much.
We are now in Perigee so remember, no harvesting root plants. This is a time when they hold to much water and too much water causes rot in storage.

What a week. By the middle of May, I think most places should have most of their garden plants in unless you live way up north. Please check the weather and the hardiness Zone map to make sure you don’t plant too early. There is nothing more frustrating than losing delicate starts to a late frost. The Farmer’s Almanac is always a great resource for gardening information.
This gardening horoscope is written for the northern hemisphere in the Western United States and while the rules will be the same, the dates/times of year, of course, will change. As I work through setting these articles up over the next few weeks, I will be adding information for the southern hemisphere as well. Please watch for this addition over the next couple of weeks.
This is this week’s gardening plan based on the constellations, descension/ascension, and the details we discussed in Gardening By the Moon #1: An Easy Astrological Guide. I have also consulted the Farmers Almanac.
Happy gardening and may the blessings of spring bring happiness to your heart, curiosity to your mind, and magic into your life.
