Welcome to Creative Gardening by the Moon for the week of May 26th-June 1st, 2024. This is a weekly column to help you know when best to plant, transplant, harvest, cultivate, and rid your gardens of pests and weeds based on the path of our moon along with the movement of the planets through the astrological signs as they move through our atmosphere.
Today, Sunday, May 25th, the moon continues through Capricorn, moving into Aquarius on Monday. Pisces pushes Aquarius out on Wednesday and stays with us through Friday while Aries takes over Saturday through Sunday.
On May 17th, we entered Apogee and will stay there through June 1st when we will move back into Perigee on June 2nd. The moon went into Descension on May 19th and will continue its descent through June 1st, moving back into Ascension on the 2nd. Let’s move on as we enjoy the rest of the 3rd quarter moving into the 4th quarter on Thursday.

Happy Sunday. Here we are in the last half of Capricorn, which will be with us through Monday. finishing up this cycle of Root Days. Your best activities on Sunday and Monday include tending root plants: transplanting potatoes, and sowing winter radishes and carrots if your weather permits.
We are now in Perigee so remember, no harvesting root plants. This is a time when they hold too much water and too much water causes rot in storage.
- As the moon is currently descending, this is going to be the best time to plant or transplant root crops. This is also going to be the best time to apply any sprays as the soil will take the nutrients in as the earth inhales.
- The moon is currently in apogee and the farthest from the planet, again making it a good time to sow seeds, bulbs, and starts. It could be a good day to catch up if you have plants that need to be put in before it’s too late.
Tuesday, May 27th – Wednesday, May 28th | Aquarius

On Tuesday the 27th through Wednesday the 28th we are moving with Aquarius through our next cycle of Flower Days. This is the time for tending flowers, broccoli, roses, all edible flowers, cauliflower, and artichokes all of the lovely plants that bloom above the ground and often the leaves.
This is a day to plant those bulbs. Is it time to start putting in bulbs that bloom in the fall in your area? Check your plant hardiness zone. It’s also a time to harvest as flavors are stronger, scents more heady, and flowers are strongest for pressing or drying. Also transplanting, thinning out your plants, and deadheading your blooms happens right now.
If you have been wanting to harvest hay, the days to do this are this week, May 29th – 30th.
- Did you know that under a descending moon, the earth breathes in? This is going to be the best time to plant or transplant root crops. This is also going to be the best time to apply any sprays as the soil and leaves will take the nutrients in as the earth inhales.
- The moon is currently in apogee and the farthest from the planet, again making it the best time to sow seeds, bulbs, and starts though not perfectly ideal as we are not on a Root Day.
Thursday, May 30th – Friday, May 31st | Pisces

On Thursday and Friday, we will travel with Pisces through 2 days of Leaf Days. Leaf days are days to work with plants that grow above the ground, leafy plants that take nutrients and water through their leaves including lettuces, cabbages, aromatic herbs, and shrubs.
During this time prune hedges if they are in need. Transplant veggies like Brussels sprouts, lettuces, and celery. Thin lettuces and chard so they don’t become overgrown and choke themselves out. If you have root plants that do still need to be planted, you can do this today as well if you weren’t able to get them in earlier this week.
A quick note, the Farmer’s Almanac is not recommending doing any planting on Friday, the 31st. They say it’s a good day to cultivate and treat, or even harvest, just avoid planting on Friday.
- As the moon is currently descending, this is going to be the best time to plant or transplant root crops. This is also going to be the best time to apply any sprays as the soil will take the nutrients in as the earth inhales.
- The moon is currently in apogee and the farthest from the planet, again making it a good time to sow seeds, bulbs, and starts though not the most ideal as it’s not a root or leaf day. It could be a good day to catch up if you have plants that need to be put in before it’s too late.
Saturday, June 1st – Sunday, June 2nd | Aries

On Saturday and Sun we are in Aries and have made it, this week through a full cycle are ending our week into 2 days of Fruit Days. This is the time to tend to plants that bear fruit. Beans, grains, tomatoes, squash. Prune the suckers from tomatoes and squash to keep them healthy. If you are in an area where you might have harvested your fruit trees, this is the time to prune those as well once the fruit is gone. If needed, this is a good time to plant or transplant fruit day crops as well.

As we are moving slowly into warmer weather in the Pacific Northwest, where I live, my little sprouts are growing fast. I’ve moved most of my plants out of my greenhouse into their forever homes and we are starting to get signs of flowers on some of the herbs like my thyme and oregano. This is by far my favorite time of year.
Next week our moon will be moving back into Perigee as well as into ascension, changing things up a little for next week. Nice to have even some little changes as we move through this part of the wheel of the year. I love the bees so decided we needed to see them for one more week. Have an amazing week.
Please check the weather and the hardiness Zone map to make sure you don’t plant too early. There is nothing more frustrating than losing delicate starts to a late frost. The Farmer’s Almanac is always a great resource for gardening information.
This gardening horoscope is written for the northern hemisphere in the Western United States and while the rules will be the same, the dates/times of year, of course, will change.
This is this week’s gardening plan based on the constellations, descension/ascension, and the details we discussed in Gardening By the Moon #1: An Easy Astrological Guide. I have also consulted the Farmers Almanac. and the book, Biodunamic Gardening referenced below.
Happy gardening and may the blessings of spring bring happiness to your heart, curiosity to your mind, and magic into your life.
