Welcome to Creative Gardening by the Moon for the week of June 2nd – 8th, 2024. This is a weekly column to help you know when best to plant, transplant, harvest, cultivate, and rid your gardens of pests and weeds based on the path of our moon along with the movement of the planets through the astrological signs as they move through our atmosphere.
Today, Sunday, June 2nd, the moon ends its time in Aries as it moves into Taurus on Monday. Taurus will continue to grace us with its presence through Tuesday, moving out of the way as Gemini pushes in on Wednesday. Friday Cancer will join us and will stay through Saturday, June 8th making way for Leo on Sunday.
On June 1st, the moon entered Perigee and will stay there until June 14th when it will re-enter Apogee. The moon went into Ascension as well on June 2nd and will continue there through June 14th, starting its Descent on June 15th. Let’s move on as we enjoy the rest of the 4th quarter.
Sunday, June 2nd | Aries

On Saturday we entered Aries bringing us to the end of this cycle’s Fruit Days. This is the time to tend to the plants that bear fruit. Beans, grains, tomatoes, squash. Prune the suckers from tomatoes and squash to keep them healthy. If you are in an area where you might have harvested your fruit trees, this is the time to prune those as well once the fruit is gone. If needed, this is a good time to plant or transplant fruit day crops as well.
The Farmer’s Almanac also advises that it is a good day to harvest grains or to plow if you are getting ready for a new crop.
- As the moon is ascending and the earth is taking a deep breath out, it’s time to use liquid treatments on the tops of the plants for nutrients or to rid your plants of pests
- The moon has now moved into Perigee so remember; no harvesting root plants. This is a time when they hold too much water and too much water causes rot in storage. This is also a great time to deadhead those already blooming spring flowers.
Monday, June 3rd – Tuesday, June 4th | Taurus

Here we are, Monday in Taurus. Through Tuesday we will be moving through Taurus and enjoying this week’s Root Days. You’re going to want to care for the plants that fruit underground, radishes, potatoes, edible bulbs, onions, etc. It’s also a good time to separate and transplant items that need spread out.
We are now in Perigee so remember; no harvesting root plants. This is a time when they hold too much water and too much water causes rot in storage. The perigee moon is the time when the sap moves most freely in the plants and into the earth. This is also a good time to deadhead plants allowing the plant to put energy into the healthy parts of the plant rather than trying to care for the dead blooms.

On Wednesday, the 5th through Thursday the 6th we are moving with Gemini through our next cycle of Flower Days. This is the time for tending flowers, broccoli, roses, all edible flowers, cauliflower, and artichokes, all of the lovely plants that bloom above the ground. It’s also a good time to harvest hay. This is the time when you want to thin plants like cauliflower and broccoli.
Are you like me and make your own teas? This is a great time to harvest flowers and leaves for tea, cut flowers, or for drying or pressing. Make sure these are all stored in a dark place.

On Friday and Saturday, we will travel with Cancer through our Leaf Days part of this week’s cycle. Leaf days are days to work with plants that grow above the ground, leafy plants that take nutrients and water through their leaves including lettuces, cabbages, aromatic herbs, and shrubs. Thin and transplant lettuce, Brussels, Cabbage, and kale. Also, cut aromatic herbs before they bloom and go to seed.
During this time prune hedges if they are in need. Avoid planting seeds during this time as they will tend to rot in the ground.

Many of our spring flowers here in the Pacific Northwest are coming to an end as the first gladiolus spikes are peeking out, the nostrums are all showing, and the pansies and petunias are getting ready to start blooming. The lilacs cut back last fall are growing tall and will soon bloom with their heady scent.
This week we are in both Perigee and ascension, changing things up from the last two weeks. Nice to have even some little changes as we move through this part of the wheel of the year. The bees are abundant, and the color is starting to spread.
Please check the weather and the hardiness zone map to make sure you don’t plant too early. There is nothing more frustrating than losing delicate starts to a late frost. The Farmer’s Almanac is always a great resource for gardening information.
This gardening horoscope is written for the northern hemisphere in the Western United States and while the rules will be the same, the dates/times of year, of course, will change.
This is this week’s gardening plan based on the constellations, descension/ascension, and the details we discussed in Gardening By the Moon #1: An Easy Astrological Guide. I have also consulted the Farmers Almanac. and the book, Biodunamic Gardening referenced below.
Happy gardening and may the blessings of spring bring happiness to your heart, curiosity to your mind, and magic into your life.
