Could Dune 3 Fight its way to theaters?

Dune 3 is currently in development due to the box office global success of Dune: Part Two. The sequel to Dune became the year’s highest-grossing movie. Additionally, the film earned more than $700 million worldwide. 2024 has seen a fair share of horror and apocalyptic type films in the first few months. Villeneuve will return to wrap up the trilogy by adapting Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah.

The production company announced the third film on April 4. Last month, Villeneuve told the New York Times, “I don’t want to reveal what I’m going to do with the third movie. I know exactly what to do. I’m writing it now.” Dune and Dune: Part Two are streaming on digital platforms, most notably HBO Max.

When Can Dune 3 Hit the Big Screens?

Although the movie is in its development stage, no release date has been confirmed yet. Considering the second film being released this year, the third one may have to wait a while. If Dune: Part Two came out on October 2023 as originally planned, there would’ve only been a two-year gap between the two films. Dune: Messiah is set place 12 years after the original book.

Considering the delay in releasing Dune: Part TwoVilleneuve’s other projects, and him wanting to take time with the third film, it is likely that it will be some time before Dune 3 is released. Along with the announcement of Dune 3, it was also revealed that Villeneuve will be working on an adaptation of Nuclear War: A Scenario, a non-fiction book. The book highlights what could happen if the world got itself into a nuclear-weapon-fueled war.

Dune: Messiah, which Dune 3 could be based on, is the second of the four novels in the Atreides era. In the book, 12 years passed since Paul became emperor. He faces opposition to his rule due to a jihad that killed billions of people. To break him, the Bene Gesserit, Spacing Guild, and Tleilaxu join forces to topple Paul. Who wouldn’t want that storyline in Dune 3?

What’s The Idea Behind Dune 3?

The idea behind Dune 3 could be adapting Dune: Messiah into the big screens. Part Two was left on a cliffhanger seemingly setting up a Holy War and strong opposition towards Paul. In the book, Paul faces opposition during his reign. Ducan Idaho, Paul’s mentor, who was played by Jason Momoa in the first is a clone version of himself.

Paul and his lover Chani also have twins (heartbreak spoiler alert: don’t set on Chani having a happy ending). Additionally, Paul gets blind but ends up having psychic visions through his sons. Considering that Dune and Dune: Part Two were adapted from the first novel, it’s possible that Dune 3 can take its helm from Dune: Messiah.

Who Will Be Casted for Dune 3?

Presumably Timothée Chalamet will return to Dune 3 as Paul Atréides, the main character in the series. It is also possible that Chalamet could rely on Hollywood’s top makeup artists to age him to the future. That would make sense Messiah takes place 12 years after Paul became emperor.

It is also hopeful that Zendaya will return as Chani since she’s a key character in the story. Fans could also see Anya Taylor-Joy, who’s latest upcoming film is Furiosa, and Florence Pugh return as their respective characters. Additionally, maybe even Momoa’s Duncan Idaho can come back to life as the cloned version of himself.

Conclusion

Dune 3 will eventually hit the big screens at some point, although not anytime soon. There is no release date for the film and there isn’t an official plot summary of the movie. Although there is some speculations on what plot point could be, nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Dune and Dune: Part Two are now streaming on online platforms. Dune is still under development.
